  3. “Tsunami aftermath: How to solve it?” - AID Disaster Relief • Immediate Relief - dead body and debris removal, food, clothing, blankets, temporary shelter, medicines and health camps for emergencies and epidemics • Second Level Relief - Construction of huts and houses and health needs • Third Level Relief - Livelihood needs for the families affected - forming cooperatives and providing livelihood support like boats, nets etc. Be the change you wish to see – Mahatma Gandhi

Immediate Relief • AID with other organizations has worked feverishly and collaborated with local authorities, whenever possible, to address immediate relief needs. • Efforts are almost complete. At this stage, strategies are being formulated to address short - and longer - term needs of trauma recovery, housing and livelihood. • Further reports on AID - popular newspaper, Be the change you wish to see – Mahatma Gandhi

Rehabilitation – Second level Relief • Construction of huts in Nagai, Cuddalore, Chennai and other areas have already underway. • Health needs, disease prevention coordinated through units such as Arogya Iyyakam. • More efforts are being started ASAP. Rehabilitation – Third level Relief • Efforts directly co-ordinated by Dr.Balaji Sampath, Kalpana Karunakaran, Dr.Ravi Arunachalam and other volunteers. • Involves several NGOs and grass root level organization. • Span of several months. • Planning has commenced, Operations will be started soon - Disaster migitation and prevention - Counselling and return to normalcy - Permanent Livelihood – Fishing, Related and Non Fishing - Community Organizational Structures : Loan credit schemes - Ensure sustainablity • Progress will be tracked and there will be periodic updates on all projects Be the change you wish to see – Mahatma Gandhi

AID Efforts in the Media AID chapters across the US and in India have been actively involved in the Tsunami relief efforts, raising funds and awareness for Tsunami relief in their local communities. These efforts have been covered in local and national news papers and TV stations, in India and the US, including CNN, Washington Post, The Hindu, The Times of India, etc. • "They are coming in large numbers, with loads of loads of relief material but no idea as to what they need to do…”, AID Chennai volunteer Ravishankar in an interview with the BBC. • “International aid organizations are accepting donations to help victims of the powerful earthquake and resulting tsunamis that caused widespread destruction in parts of South Asia and East Africa”, AID listed on CNN. • “College students get daily updates from AID India, which has volunteers on the field, and then find a way to supply them with what is required”, Shonali Muthalaly, The Hindu • “U.S.-educated engineers like Balaji Sampath, and their calling in development work in their homeland”, Sudish Kamath, The Hindu Be the change you wish to see – Mahatma Gandhi

Effective Coordination and Resource Management:AID has ensured the creation of the following structure to allow for efficient collection and distribution of material, information and services.(a)  Collection Team – Responsible for collecting relief materials and establishing contacts, gathering information about needs.(b)  Allocation Team -  Responsible  for allocation and distibution of supplies and volunteers to affected areas (Nagai, Cuddalore, Kalpakkam, Kanyakumari and Chennai)(c)  Field Team –  Responsible for relief work in the affected areas(d) Volunteer and Work Coordination Team – Responsible for assigning tasks to volunteers.
