  2. Goal of organism - • To survive and reproduce • Resources needed to do this

  3. Niche (neesh) or (nitch) • The range of conditions in which an organism lives (habitat) AND the way the organism uses those conditions

  4. Example: Squirrel Niche • Biotic resources: trees (for shelter), nuts (for food), other squirrels (for reproduction) • Abiotic resources: sunlight (for warmth), oxygen (for respiration), rain (for water) • (notice how a niche includes how the resources are used)

  5. Competition - • When two organisms attempt to use the same limited resources in the same area (same niche) • Can be intraspecies – same species • Interspecies – different species

  7. Niche sharing – SAME species will divide resources (sometimes)

  8. Competitive Exclusion Principle • No two SPECIES can occupy the same niche One will outcompete the other one Ex) 2 bacteria species in same culture (food)

Competition Activity • Get in your big lab groups (folding class – around 4-5 per group at back tables) • Divide lab group into: 2 “hiders”, 1 red squirrel, 1 gray squirrel • Everyone help hiders attach clear tape to each acorn • Hiders will go around the science wing only and tape the acorns on the walls, etc within reach.

  10. At the sound of go, squirrels will go and gather as many acorns as possible within time limit • Competition ends when I yell and clap • Return to room • Count up acorns, for every grey squirrel, multiply acorn total by 3. • Compile class data in output • Draw conclusion
