Coming to North America: Canadian Connection • What’s going on in North America during the time period of the trans-Atlantic trade in African peoples? • Canada was not a country yet (not til 1867)…so it was held by British and French (depending on the area) • “New France” and “British North America” would include parts of Canada as we now know it

  3. What’s happening in Canada?Re-organize the events on the slips of paper into chronological order….come to a consensus as a group.

Jacques Cartier lands in Maritimes & claims it for France • Samuel de Champlain surrenders Quebec to Kirk Brothers of England • Control over present day NS was given to the King of Scotland by the King of England (and named Nova Scotia) • Samuel de Champlain explores Great Lakes • Mathieu de Costa arrives in present day Canada as a translator • French take over Dutch trading posts in West Africa • Quebec city founded by Samuel & Champlain • Britain becomes involved in T.A.T.A.P. • Samuel de Champlain established 1st European settlement in what is now Canada @ Port Royal, NS • John Cabot lands in CB & Nfld & claims it for Britain • Olivier leJeune arrives in present day Canada as an enslaved person with Champlain & Kirk Brothers
