  2. South Omaha • South Omaha, Nebraska is a former city and current district of Omaha, Nebraska. During its initial development phase the town's nickname was "The Magic City" because of the seemingly overnight growth due to the rapid development of the Union Stockyards.

  3. South Omaha • Annexed by the City of Omaha in 1915, the community has numerous historical landmarks. Many are within the South Omaha Main Street Historic District.

  4. South Omaha • The traditional borders of South Omaha included Vinton Street to the north, Harrison Street to the south, the Missouri River on the east, and 42nd Street on the west.

  5. South Omaha • South Omaha was, and continues to be, culturally diverse. Many residents are descended from the Irish, Polish, Czech, Lithuanian, Italian, and Latino immigrants who made up the original workforce in the meatpacking industry. In recent decades, South Omaha has seen an influx of Hispanic and Sudanese populations.

  7. South Omaha Business Association • On March 29, 1922 the business people of South Omaha incorporated the South Omaha Merchants Association with the following purpose:

South Omaha Business Association • "The object and purpose for which this Association is organized and the business in which it shall be engaged shall be the promotion of the government, industrial and public interests and public welfare of the district south of A Street of Omaha, Nebraska and to co-operate with the Chamber of Commerce of the City of Omaha, Nebraska."

  9. South Omaha Business Association • Over the years, the South Omaha Merchants Association has become the South Omaha Business Association (SOBA) and South Omaha itself has changed dramatically. "A" Street is now Interstate 80, north/south traffic now used the Kennedy Freeway over South 24th Street, and only a small portion of the meat packing industry that put South Omaha on the map is still in operation.

  10. South Omaha Business Association • Yet the more South Omaha has changed, the more it remains the same. Immigrant entrepreneurial energy and ambition remains the bedrock of business old and new.

South Omaha Business Association • In recent years, SOBA has helped strenghten the community by: • Taking a leadership role in the redevelopment of the historic South 24th Street Business District which includes the recently completed streetscape project and the Tree of Life sculpture installation on the corner of 24th and L Street. • Why is this important?

Proceeds from the annual event are disbursed to several local non-profit organizations serving community residents. • Why is this important?
