  2. Aim for today • Develop your understanding of the concept of momentum Momentum = Mass x Velocity

  3. Quiz • How many principles are there in regard to stability and balance? • If someone has a small base of support what is more likely to happen? • What sports would an increase in friction not be wanted, in terms of balance? • Why do girls have a lower COG? • What is so special about the Fosbury Flop?

  4. Momentum • Momentum is a product of mass that is moving. • The greater the momentum, the more force needed to stop or change its direction. • 2 types – Linear and Angular • Liner = From A to B • Angular = Rotation

Linear Momentum • Mass = typically large body of matter with no definite shape • Velocity = The speed of something in a given direction • Example • Therefore, the bigger the person and the faster they travel the greater the momentum. • Youtube clip – FuiFuiMoiMoi & Sam Burgess Momentum = Mass x Velocity

  6. Activity Time • Question 1 page 69 • Will require a calculator • Work out the momentum for each cyclist

  7. Linear Momentum Cont… • Important concept in many different sports, used in all sports! • When would this be used in badminton? • Shot put, they are tall and strong. Why would this be a great asset to have?

  8. Linear Momentum Cont… • When sports introduce racquets and clubs, they can generate even more momentum. • In golf this can be perfectly seen in the drive. • Youtube Clip – Longest golf drive • The club has a high velocity, add the mass of the ball and you generate a great deal of momentum

  9. Angular Momentum • For something to have angular momentum, a force must be applied that creates rotation. Eccentric force. • Everyday examples, using a door. • A force that is applied to one side of the COG of an object rather than through the COG

  10. Activity Time • Need a very willing volunteer • Using the practical demo on page 70 • If a mass is closer to the axes of rotation then it will rotate faster. • Youtube – Double axel

  11. Angular momentum Cont… • This is a key concept that is used in a number of different sports. • Generally it does involve some form of racquet, however, in gymnastics and ice skating it is essential. • Complete Questions on page 70

  12. Activity Time • In 4 groups • Each group is to complete one of the questions on page 71 • Then they are to then explain their answer to the group. • It is your responsibility for the learning of everyone else in the class.

  13. Recap • What is the equation for momentum? • By adding a racquet/club etc to a sport, how does that create greater momentum? • How do you increase angular momentum? • Name the 3 types of axes of roation
