  2. Unit 1 Assessment • No Assessments scheduled for this Unit • Complete – Introduce Yourself Response • Read about this course and familiarize yourself with CAPSTONE Assessment projects. • Participate in the open discussion • Visit Extra, Extra!

  3. Unit 2 Assessment • Short paper – Criminological Theory • In a 3 page paper, summarize and provide an example of how biological, sociological, and psychological theories of crime causation affect human behavior and actions. Be sure to provide an example of each and include the reference to the example that may include an article, case study, adjudicated case, etc. • The title page, abstract and reference pages do not count in page length!

  4. Unit 3 Assessment • Scenario Project: Criminal Law • Imagine you are the Chief of your local police enforcement agency and one of your officers was involved in a shooting incident that resulted in injuries to a robbery perpetrator. Review the following scenario and identify the legal issues that may arise from the police officer’s actions, if any. Be sure to carefully review the facts as presented and summarize in an official letter to the Mayor of your city, the justification of the officer’s actions by incorporating areas of the criminal law. • In a separate letter, and based on the same scenario, take the opposite approach and submit a letter to the Mayor stating how, as a defense attorney, the officer that was involved in the shooting was civilly liable and the City is vulnerable to a lawsuit that is going to be filed.

  5. Unit 3 Assessment Continued… • Scenario and instructions are posted in document format in Doc Sharing. • Scenario may also be viewed under the Unit 3 tab of your course home page.

  6. Unit 4 Assessment • Unit 4 Assessment Project, Short Paper: Hypothesis and Conclusion • Choose one of the scientific methods of research inquiry (survey, interview, observation, statistical data collection, etc.) and write a short hypothesis and conclusion, based on your method of inquiry. Your point of focus must be centered on the professional practices of criminal justice practitioners. For example, you could propose a hypothesis that focuses on whether law enforcement is better equipped to handle terrorism post 9-11 or whether airline safety has improved since the attacks of 9-11, etc. Your paper must include the hypothesis, content that outlines what method you chose, and how you gathered your evidence and a conclusion. The paper should be no more than 3 pages in length (excluding Title, abstract and Reference pages).

  7. Unit 5 Assessment • None • This is your reading week. Take the opportunity to read and research for your upcoming Assessments in Units 6-9

  8. Unit 6 Assessments • Unit 6 Assessment Project, PowerPoint Project: Leadership • In a 20 slide power point presentation provide information as well as differentiate, amongst the roles of the following areas in criminal justice leadership strategies and practices: organizational culture, behavioral theory, planning, and community relations. Your slide should include, at a minimum, 5 presentations, with notes, for each area.

  9. Unit 7 Assessments • Unit 7 Assessment Project, Scenario Project : Investigative Plan • You are elected the New Chief of your Department in City X and are charged with the responsibility of creating a plan to deal with the multiple daytime robbery attacks in your area. Your first order of business is to assemble the police reports on all of the attacks and create a strategic operational/investigative plan to address the crimes and ultimately present this plan to the mayor of City X at the next meeting, which will be held in a public forum.

  10. Unit 8 Assessments • Unit 8 Assessment Project, Short Paper: Emerging Technologies • With the advent of various technological advancements, law enforcement efforts in the investigation and prosecution of crime have been met with positive results. However, with every advantage comes a disadvantage, as criminals have also benefited from these technologies and use during the commission of their crimes or as a tool for their crimes (this is evidenced in computer related offenses and the misuse of the Internet).

  11. Unit 8 Assessments Continued… • In a 3 page paper, address the following areas in full detail: summarize the advantages of computers and the use of computer technology in investigations, summarize the disadvantages to law enforcement with respect to the advancements of computers, research a case where the computer was used to aid in the commission of a crime, research a case where the use of the computer was beneficial to the prosecution in a criminal case and provide a final conclusion/paragraph that addresses your subjective opinion as to whether these technologies, in an overall sense, are of benefit or a hindrance to law enforcement efforts.

  12. Unit 9 Assessments • Unit 9 Assessment Project, PowerPoint Project: Transnational Crime • Compare and contrast two separate cultures and ethnicities that harbor ill-will toward the United States. In a 12-15 PowerPoint slide presentation, please compare both of your selections and be sure to discuss the role that socialization and religion play in shaping the beliefs of these cultures. Be prepared to provide why these beliefs are formed, how culture and religion shaped these beliefs and why these cultures are militant in their beliefs toward the United States.
