  3. Session Outline/Overview • What is teaching? • Different routes into teaching • Teaching at Exeter

  4. What is Teaching? • A process of: (a) acquiring, understanding and applying factual information, concepts, principles and ideas of a subject(s) and, (b) communicating this knowledge so that it is understandable and comprehensible to the learner (in a school-based context)

  5. Different Routes into Teaching Traditional route: • Undergraduate BSc/BEd/BA (Hons) Degree (3 or 4 years) • PGCE (1 year) Alternative/employment-based route: • SCITT (1 year) • GTP (1 year)

  6.   10. PGCE(Postgraduate Certificate in Education) • TWO PGCE Programmes: 1. Primary PGCE (3-11 age range) 2. Secondary PGCE (11-18 age range) • Each programme lasts for ONE year • Leads to a recognised professional qualification (PGCE) with QTS • School-Based Work is a major part of the two PGCE programmes

Assessment • Student teachers are recommended for QTS by the University • Student teachers are awarded QTS by the General Teaching Council for England* *Student teaches MUST successfully pass the QTS Skills Tests in Literacy, Numeracy and ICT • Formal assessment is through University Written Assignments (x3) and professional competence during School-Based Work • NO formal examinations

Secondary PGCE Programme • Qualifies you to teach pupils at Key Stage 3, Key Stage 4 and Post-16 (e.g. GCSE & A Level PE) • Lasts 36 weeks (12 weeks in University and 24 weeks in schools) • THREE fully integrated Modules: 1. Professional Studies 2. Main Subject (Physical Education) 3. School-Based Work (in TWO schools)

Main Subject (Physical Education) • Held in high regard both nationally and internationally • Awarded the top grades possible by OFSTED upon inspection in 2004-2005 • Widely recognised as the leading PE Course nationally • FOCI: (a) research and educational theory underpinning practice, (b) active participation (Piaget), (c) peer collaboration (Vygotsky), (d) structure and organisation (Skinner) and, (e) taking responsibility for your own learning

Entry onto the PGCE Physical Education Course at Exeter • Minimum grade of ‘C’, in Physical Education, at GCSE and/or A Level • Minimum degree classification of a lower second class (2:2); in a sports-related discipline • Minimum of 10 days of teaching experience in a secondary school Physical Education department • Valid and current First Aid Certificate or equivalent (e.g. one-day Appointed Persons’ First Aid Certificate or Emergency First Aid Certificate) • Valid and current Pool Lifesaving Qualification (i.e. National Pool Lifeguard Qualification) 6. NGB Coaching Award Course in ONE Games Activity which you have LIMITED subject knowledge
