  2. Overview Primary School: 4 – 11/12 years Secondary: Junior Certificate – 12-15 years Leaving Certificate – 15-18 years Third Level: Post-Leaving Certificate courses, Institutes of Technology, University.

  3. Inspectorate: Education Act 1998 Section 13. • An Inspector shall visit recognised schools and centres of education . . . and following • consultation with the board, parents of students and teachers as appropriate . . . • —Evaluate the organisation and operation of those schools and centres and the quality and effectiveness of the education provided in those schools and centres . . .

  4. Key Statistics (state funded schools) • Primary: 450,000 students (8 year cycle) in 3000 schools • Secondary: 320,000 students (6 year cycle) in 740 schools • Third level: 140,000. (37,000 – 1980)

  5. Educational Disadvantage and Social Inclusion. • 1000 students do not transfer from Primary to secondary. • 2400 leave secondary with no qualification. • Approx 13% leave school with a Junior Certificate but without a Leaving Certificate.

  6. DEIS Delivering Equality of Opportunity In Schools An Action Plan for Educational Inclusion.

  7. DEIS • 203 PP schools have DEIS status (740) Focus on: • Retention and attendance • Literacy and numeracy • Attainment and progression • Partnership with parents • Support for transitions

  8. School Support Programme (Primary) Approx 300 Primary schools in areas of highest concentration of disadvantage • Early start programmes and 20:1 PTR, home school community liaison, reading recovery programmes. • other designated schools: Financial support and school book grant support.

  9. Second-level Supports DEIS Schools • School Completion Programme (SCP) • Curricular support; Junior Certificate Schools Programme (JCSP), Leaving Certificate Applied Programme (LCA). • Targeted supports for International students and Traveller students. • Additional resources

  10. Access and Transition • Access programmes to third level. • Youth reach programmes • Back to Education initiatives • Links with voluntary Youth sector services

  11. Concerns • International students / refugee groups. • Traveller students (access) • Concentrated areas of disadvantage. • Transfer, retention, completion. • Retention of teachers • Third-level uptake. • League tables!
