  3. Open Minded Portraits • What are they? • Uses: • Can be done with one character or a series of characters • Can be used for one event in the book or used to show how a character grows/progresses throughout a novel Teacher Example: Open-Minded Portrait from Dear John

  4. Steps to Creating an Open-Minded Portrait • Guided Practice • Step 1: • Make a portrait of a characters • Step 2: • Cut out the Portrait and Thinking pages • Step 3: • Design the thinking pages • Step 4: • Share the completed open-minded portraits

  5. Assessment • Differentiation • Grading • Completeness • Details • Neatness • Pictures instead of words • Compare more than one character • Provide or Not Provide the basic outline

  6. Steps to Creating an Open-Minded Portrait • Guided Practice • Step 1: • Read the Chapter • Step 2: • Pick a Character • Step 3: • Draw the character on the Portrait Page • Step 4: • Fill out the Thinking Page as the character develops

  7. Create Your Open Minded Portrait • Describe what the character looks like (appearance) • Imagine you are this character. What are they thinking about? What are they feeling?

  8. Share • Have students share their portraits.
