### 806.3.7 Linear/nonlinear functions

Linear/nonlinear functions

• Linear Function–the graph of a linear function has a constant rate of change (straight line)
• Nonlinear Function–the graph of a nonlinear function does not have a constant rate of change (straight line)
• Note: You can use the pencil test to help determine if a graph is a function
Lesson Quiz

Tell whether each set of ordered pairs satisfies a linear function.

• {(-3, 10), (-1, 9), (1, 7), (3, 4), (5, 0)}
• {(3, 4), (5, 7), (7, 10), (9, 13), (11, 16)}

Tell whether each function is linear.

3) y = 3 – 2x

4) 3y = 12

5) Is the graph to the right linear?

Why or why not?
