The Beginning • Opened 5 ½ years ago • Not satisfied with the direction Special Ed. was going • Work with neuropsychology • BRAINs opened at a similar time • Behavioral Resources and Institute for Neuropsychological Services • More of the evaluation • ADD meds only work for frontal lobe • Pulling an all nighter • The handout

  3. Educational Therapy • Tries to remediate • Learning tailored in the way our brain thinks • Physiology of dyslexia and “normal” • We teach to the “normal” • The way we teach makes a different population special ed. • Focuses on using strengths to address learning needs.

  4. P.L.A.Y. Project • For Autism Spectrum • Brain goes through typical pattern of development and will naturally develop capacities for language. • Play=stimulation • Kids with Autism behave according to reactions • No child has bad behavior just to have bad behavior.

  5. Kids with EBD at EnCourage • Antecedent behavior • Behavior result of stress and boredom • Work with parents to determine background history • Neuropsychology evaluation • Schools tend to put a Band-Aid on • If students are engaged and feel comfortable, their behavior will improve.
