facing our fears
Facing our Fears
  • Kyiv Symphony Orchestra & Chorus
  • There are times when calamity strikes our lives.
    • Is God with me?
    • Does God care?
  • Goliath is not a parable
    • He was a real threat.
1 real fear
1. Real Fear
  • Philistines were well inside Israel’s territory
  • Israel & Saul are passive and directionless (v 2)
    • Saul was appointed for this (8:19-20)
    • He looked ideal for the task (9:2)
    • But Saul & all Israel were greatly afraid (v 11)
1 real fear1
1. Real Fear . . .
  • Meanwhile . . . A young shepherd boy arrives.
    • A new perspective – the “living God” (v 26)
  • David was God’s choice for king.
    • His three eldest brothers were not (16:6-9, v 13)
    • Eliab sees David in a very human light (v 28)
      • He thinks David just wants to watch a battle.
1 real fear2
1. Real Fear . . .
  • It had been going on a long time (v 16)
    • It’s why David was allowed to face Goliath.
    • The situation was not good - all were afraid (v 24)
  • God’s “anointed” (Heb. Messiah) delivers Israel
  • His “greater son” will conquerseven greater enemies: Sin, Death, Devil)
2 real courage
2. Real Courage
  • The people’s choice for king is afraid.
  • God’s choice for king steps up.

Where did his courage come from?

    • A life of experiences of God’s power (v 34-37)
    • A willing servant (like his Greater Son – Mark 10:45)
2 real courage1
2. Real Courage . . .
  • How God prepared David for this day –
    • By sending lions and bears to attack David’s flock !!
    • David went after them because it was his job.
    • As he was faithful he discovered God delivered him.
  • He learned God’s faithfulness through hard & terrifying experience
  • Equally our walk with God is built on daily faithfulness
3 real deliverance
3. Real Deliverance
  • The Israelites were desperate.
  • Another lesson had to be learned:
    • Saul tried to equip David in the usual way
  • BUT . . . Stepping out in faith cannot be done in the way of the world (Eph 4:22-24)
3 real deliverance1
3. Real Deliverance . . .
  • David: “I cannot go in these” (v 39)
    • He could only go as he always had – in faith
  • The bigger story –
    • How was God’s anointed going to come to prominence?
    • Prominence – God set up the perfect PR gig for David.
      • A time of national crisis.
3 real deliverance2
3. Real Deliverance . . .
  • David was there as a “servant”
    • David knew there was a “Living God” in Israel
    • God worked through the least, weakest, youngest …
    • No-one knew David’s battles with lions & bears
  • With each step of faith we experience God’s activity in our lives.
living it
Living it . . .
