  1. Century Athletes Practice Time. Jacqueline Quezada Karla Valadez Period: 2 2011-2012

  2. CA Standards • 8.0 -Students organize and describe distribution of data by using a number of different methods, including frequency tables, histograms, standard line and bar graphs, stem-and-leaf displays, scatter plots, and box-and-whisker plots • 17.0-Students determine confidence intervals for a simple random sample from a normal distribution of data and determine the sample size required for a desired margin of error • 18.0-Students determine the p-value for a statistic for a simple random sample for a normal distribution

  3. Hypothesis • We believe that the average hours per day a Century athlete practices is 2.5 hours.

  4. Data Collection • Cluster sampling was used as the data collector. • We will collect data by only asking ONLY athletes at century. We went around during 6th period and asked 40 athletes that were outside practicing. We asked 5 athletes of 8 different sports.

  5. Data • Length of time practiced(in hours) • 3,4,2,3.5,3,2,2,4,3,3,3.5,3,3,3.5,4,4.5,2,2,3.5,3.5,4,1.5,2,1,3,5,3.5,3.5,2,1,1.5,1.5,3,3,4,2.5,3,2.5,2.5,4

  6. Histogram

  7. Statistics • From our survey, Century’s athlete mean time is 2.9 hours with a standard deviation of 3 hours.

  8. Confidence Interval • 95 % Confidence Interval • Z-interval • (2.0 hrs ,3.8 hrs) • We are 95% confident that the mean practicing time for all Century athletes are between 2.0 to 3.8 hours.

  9. Hypothesis Testing At 5% level of significance, we reject the Ho, there is not enough evidence to support our claim.

  10. Error analysis • Our sample mean is 2.9 hours, and the 95% confidence level for the population mean is between 2.0 to 3.8 hours. The marginal error is about 0.9 hours. • Our sample error is due to possible un-representation of the population. We might need to take more sample due to athlete absences.

  11. Conclusion We hypothesized that Century athletes practice time average is 2.9 hours. In our survey of 40 students, we find the sample mean of 2.8 hours with a standard deviation of .9980 hours. We conclude that the population mean for all the students is between 2.0 to 3.8 hours with 95% confident. We test our initial hypothesis with 5% level of significance, and confirm our hypothesis is incorrect.
