AI change is progressing at an unprecedented rate and various fields are experiencing this change with concerns arises regarding the potential shift of professions such as architecture. Automating most of these processes does not make AI a threat to architects but a topic of discussion and debate. Thus, AI is undoubtedly imposing unprecedented changes within the architectural design process; however, it is beyond doubt that AI can act as a tool far from threatening the position of architects.

AI change is progressing at an unprecedented rate and various fields are experiencing this change with concerns arises regarding the potential shift of professions such as architecture. Automating most of these processes does not make AI a threat toarchitectsbut a topic of discussion and debate. Thus, AI is undoubtedly imposing unprecedented changes within the architectural design process; however, it is beyond doubt that AI can act as a tool far from threatening the position of architects.
AI’s Role in Architecture AI can be of great help to architects in several ways: starting with automating several architectural tasks, to helping with the generation of architectural concepts. For instance, an AI software can generate a model in three dimensions within a short span, improve the design and structure of buildings and even estimate how efficient a building will be concerning the use of energy. Since these previous aspects can be done automatically, architects can pay much attention and effort on other inspiring and complex works. It can also analyzing big data to find trends which might not be easily recognizable to architects early in the design phase of a product.
Creativity and Human Touch Although AI can design based on the algorithms and data the reach of the AI decision-making creativity is limited by the scope of the algorithm and the inability to understand cultural and emotional context of the architecture. Buildings are not simply the vessels; they are the habitats when people inhabit them and the spaces where they function. Many aspects of architectural design, including the human factor, reception to people’s needs, and instincts cannot be addressed by AI. AI cannot grasp the importance of the social, historical and cultural aspects in a project that architects bear in mind.
Partnership rather than a Substitution In the future, AI and architects will work hand in hand whereby the AI will engage in performing calculations and analysis, while the architect will be responsible for designing, decision making and client consultation. But the question should not be how AI will replace architects, which it will most certainly not do, but how architects will use AI in order to work much smarter and more efficiently than they are doing now, and thus provide much better and more sustainable solutions to the problems we will be facing in the next decades.
