  1. NOOS

  2. Overview and status of NOOS North West Shelf Operational Oceanographic System October 2003

  3. OOSes GOOS Global Ocean OBSERVING system EuroGOOS European component of .... BOOS Baltic Operational Oceanographic System NOOS NW shelf Operational Oceanographic System

  4. Some history: EuroGOOS NW Shelf Task Team 1996 - 2002 Chairs: Howard Cattle (1996-1999) Leen Droppert 1999-2001 • Liaison and networking - Task Team meetings • inventory of models / inventory of observations • TRANSPOSE proposal (was unsuccessful) • ESODAE phase 1 Concerted Action proposal 1998 Started Feb 1999 • Storm Surge forecast exchange - after December 1999 • Members input to EuroGOOS Working Groups • NOOS Plan (2001) • NOOS Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) • NOOS (2002)

  5. NOOS Strategic Plan 2002-2006 Goals • Develop and implement online marine data and information services • Give a reliable description of the actual marine condition of the NWS area including physical, sedimentological and ecosystem variables • Provide analysis, forecasts and model-based products describing the marine conditions • Establish a marine database from which time-series and statistical analyses can be obtained including trends and changes in the marine environment and the economic, environmental and social impacts • collaborate with national and multi-national agencies in the NWS area to maximise the efficiency of the ocean observing system, and to maximise the value of the information products

  6. NOOS Strategic Plan 2002-2006 Strategic Principles • Make formal agreements and commitments between participating agencies to create networks of existing systems and services, delivering operational ocean data products • NOOS must plan and innovate so as to fill the gaps in existing systems, creating new structures and introducing new technology, new hardware and exploiting new scientific developments. • NOOS will be developed in the context of GOOS, EuroGOOS and Coastal Ocean GOOS • NOOS will maintain and strengthen working relations with other European agencies and bodies concerned with the NW European shelf seas • NOOS will consult user communities on a routine basis to improve products and services, and to introduce new components into the observing system

  7. NOOS MoU • Full Members: organisations engaged in national operational oceanographic services • Associate members: research institutions, non-governmental, multi-national organisations • NOOS projects • non members may be invited to participate in a specified project • Annual Meeting • Steering Group (chair plus four members)

  8. NOOS Members June2003 (Not all NW shelf forecasting / modelling / monitoring centres are at a national Met Service....) Members (8) • BSH, DMI, IMR, MUMM, MetO, met.no, RIKZ, POL Associate Members (3) • NERSC, NIVA, GKSS Interested but not yet signed • CEFAS, DWD, KNMI, Marine Institute Ireland, SMHI Informed but not signing or no response yet • IFREMER, MeteoFrance, RDANH, CERFACS, NWO, SOC, IfM

  9. NOOS Steering Group 2003 Martin Holt Met Office co chair Jan van Schoonhoven RIKZ co chair Bruce Hackett met.no Jun She DMI Stephan Dick BSH

  10. NOOS Projects and activities Data Exchange (NOOS-surge-exchange) • Storm Surge forecasts => observations => water level maps • SST => create SST maps Modelling infrastructure (NOOS-ESODAE1) • provision of boundary data for nested 3D models • provision of surface forcing data and rivers data • Exchange of modelled transports (new project Autumn 2003) NOOS website www.noos.cc Other activities • FP5 EDIOS, ODON, Ferry Box. • FP6 - input to MERSEA, SERAM, possible ESIP • ICES - NORSEPP (North Sea pilot project nowcast and ecosystem modelling for fisheries application)

  11. North Sea Storm Surge forecasts exchange • Initiated by DMI after December 1999 • BSH, DMI, MUMM, KNMI, met.no, Met Office • FTP box data exchange for selected locations • Backup and comparison • Next steps: • observations • gridded model fields?

  12. North Sea Storm Surge forecasts exchange

  13. North Sea Storm Surge forecasts exchange: DMI

  14. NOOS Project NOOS-ESODAE1 3D modelling 12km => 6NM => 1NM

  15. NOOS Project NOOS-ESODAE1 • Met Office POLCOMS ~12km Atlantic Margin model • nested into deep ocean FOAM model for boundary updates • gridded daily fields of temperature and salinity (“grib” format) sent by ftp to DMI, soon to MUMM also • Additional validation, feedback • potential for improved 3D modelling at DMI, MUMM

  16. Potential NOOS project: NORSEPP contribution NW shelf climate status assessment Monthly mean temperature, salinity and currents data from 12km Atlantic Margin model for NW European shelf seas : TEMPERATURE July 2002

  17. Flagellates Diatoms Nitrate Phosphate Silicate Potential NOOS project: NORSEPP contribution Operational Ecosystem Forecasting (IMR/met.no) Algae Nutrients

  18. NOOS project : water level map

  19.  NOOS Strategic Plan 2002-2006 Next Steps (1) • Agree and sign an MoU defining the commitment of participating organisations • Prepare Implementation Plan on the basis of commitments by members to projects • Review extension of the range of qualifications required for members of the NWSTT and the NOOS plan • Establish a management structure and procedures for implementation of the NOOS plan • Emphasise the development of water quality and ecological monitoring systems and models

  20. NOOS Strategic Plan 2002-2006 Next Steps (2)  • Work with ICES to develop products which are of maximum value to ecosystem management and fisheries management • Prepare a NOOS Data and Information Management plan within the EuroGOOS data policy. • Define routine procedures for consultation with user communities, industries, services and other agencies in the NWS area, so as to update and improve NOOS services and products.

  21.  NOOS: A key point • NOOS builds on the day-to-day business of the operational agencies • NOOS is sustainable

  22. NOOS Links BOOS • DMI, SMHI Atlantic Task Team • Met Office, met.no MERSEA (strand 1 and IP) • NERSC (Johannesen), Met Office (Bell), met.no(Hackett) ICES • NORSEPP (Holt) MFSPP • to be developed; research activities

  23. NOOS Challenges 2003-2006 Bring in full membership of NW shelf coastlines Implementation Plan Networked “European ocean forecast modelling” for NW Shelf Develop links to users and SMEs (build on ESODAE) Develop links with R&D institutes FP6 (MERSEA, not ESIP, not SERAM)
