  2. Imagery • Any literary reference to the five senses. • Any word that creates a picture in your head.

  3. Example of Imagery The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock by T.S. Eliot Let us go then, you and I, When the evening is spread out against the sky Like a patient etherized upon a table; Let us go, through certain half-deserted streets, The muttering retreats Of restless nights in one-night cheap hotels And sawdust restaurants with oyster-shells

  4. Irony • The use of words to express something different from and often opposite to their literal meaning.

  5. Example of Irony • You stay up all night studying for a test. When you go to class, you discover the test is not until the next day.

  6. Juxtaposition • The act or an instance of placing two or more things side by side, which is used to compare or contrast.

  7. Example of Juxtaposition The elderly woman is comparing herself to her younger image.

  8. Symbol • A word, object, phrase, or image that is used to represent, resemble, or stand for something else.

  9. The eyes of God in the Great Gatsby is an example of a symbol. Example of Symbol
