  1. ES2- Concerns OICA 31st session of GRSP May 2002

  2. ES2 - Concerns • EEVC WG12 has reported on the « Development and evaluation of the ES2 dummy » • This report raises questions on some remaining key-points

  3. ES2 - Concerns • Variation of performance criteria between ES1 and ES2 • Directional sensitivity • Inter-rib homogeneity • Thorax damping characteristics and stiffness • Interactions between body segments

  4. ES2 - ConcernsVariation of performance criteria • CEVE report: ES2 criteria has lower criteria than ES1 in biofidelity tests • It is the contrary in pendulum tests • Only 7.6 m/s sled tests are fully exploitable. Nevertheless, results on ES1 tests are highly spread • In 10.3 m/s sled tests, maximum deflection is always reached for the uppermost rib

  5. ES2 - ConcernsDirectional sensitivity • Possible increase of deflection on ES2 at negative angles: 10% • No data on ES1 at negative angles

  6. ES2 - ConcernsInter-rib homogeneity • Unexpected lack of inter-rib homogeneity not explained • Uppermost rib deflection often increase with ES2 whilst the mean deflection decreases; criteria is based on the higher deflection

  7. ES2 - ConcernsThorax damping characteristics and stiffness • Friction is eliminated in ES2 and compensated by increasing tuning spring • ES2 thorax stiffer and less damped

  8. ES2 - ConcernsThorax damping characteristics and stiffness • The observed frequency in some FST is a consequence of elastic rebound of ribs • This leads to high VC value due to high velocity at high deflections

  9. ES2 - ConcernsInteractions between body segments • ES2 pelvis stiffness is lower • ES2 pelvis is highly sensitive to angle • Effects on thorax have to be investigated

  10. ES2 - ConcernsConclusions • Does ES2 improve real safety ? • Agreement on back plate • Need for further explanations on other key-points
