NOHA • Founded in 1993/1994 by 5 European Universities to establish a Master‘s Programme in Humanitarian Action (Today 7 universities Aix-Marseille/Deusto/Bochum/Dublin/Groningen/ Louvain/ Uppsala) providing a MASTER‘s in HUMANITARIAN ACTION Advised and assisted by DG ECHO and DG EAC • To fill a serious gap in the European educational landscape which had ignored humanitarian action as an important issue in Master Programmes Consortium: NOHA Speaker: Cristina Churruca

Objectives of the Partnership • To establish and develop a framework for cooperation and students and scholars mobility . • To further the development of humanitarian action education through an agreed programme of joint research and training. • To enhance the quality of European higher education by fostering co-operation with third countries in order to improve the development of human resources and to promote dialogue and exchange for a better understanding between peoples and cultures. Selecting the partners in North America and South America • Building on established links with excellent centres and looking for complementary programmes: • York University, Canada: Graduate Diploma Programme in Refugee and Migration Studies,.  • Columbia University , New York, USA: Humanitarian Affairs Program • Universidade de Brasilia: Diploma Course on International Law of Armed Conflict • Universidad Javeriana, Bogotá, Colombia: Speciality in Conflict Resolution Consortium: NOHA Speaker: Cristina Churruca

Defining the fields of cooperation • Challenge: Adapt the partnership to an existing programme structure The third country higher education institutions provide an input during the third component of the NOHA Mundus programme (D. Research and Work Placement Component) during the months from June through to August Consortium: NOHA Speaker: Cristina Churruca

Defining the fields of cooperation Activities involved: • Participation in selected modules in each of the institutions: • York: Summer School in Refugee Studies, • Colombia: Course on Conflict Resolution • New York: Seminar on Humanitarian System • Brasilia: Module on Human Rights and Humanitarian Action • Early stages of research for the master thesis • Directed work with international and local organisations Consortium: NOHA Speaker: Cristina Churruca

Defining the fields of cooperation Early stages of research for the master thesis : • Third-country partner’s research priority options • Students apply for a third country partner institution offering research priorities matching his/her Master Thesis. • Research jointly supervised by local academics and NOHA scholars • Home supervisor and partner supervisor. Challenge: Implementing a cooperation framework • Bilateral agreements between NOHA and each partner institution: Associate membership • NOHA Focal Points: In charge of information exchange between the NOHA institutions and the third-country NOHA Partner institution for which he/she is responsible • Partner Focal Point: In charge of information exchange between his/her Partner institution and the NOHA institutions Consortium: NOHA Speaker: Cristina Churruca

  12. Recognition of study period Each of these institutions provides the student with a transcript of records which will allow full recognition of the period abroad. The consortium has agreed that out of the total 30 ECTS credit points awarded for the fourth element of the NOHA programme-research and internship- 15 ECTS credits will be awarded by the home institution for the presentation of the master thesis and the other 15 ECTS credit points will be recognized for the work being done at the third country partner institution. Mobility Squeme • 30 students per year (4 students per EU University plus 2 in a rotating system) • 8 scholars, 1 per EU University plus 1 scholar selected by the NOHA Mundus Consortium for specific purposes • Selection criteria include academic record, motivation, interest , language skills, research experience, professional experience and individual career projection. • Languages of instruction main languages of humanitarian action: English, Spanish, French and Portuguese. Recommendations • For Erasmus Mundus Action 3 : • Increased partnership grant at least to match the number of partners for management purposes • Increased the European students grants • Contemplate the possibility of offering partner institutions student grants • For Consortium: • Make full use of partners for research and teaching Consortium: NOHA Speaker: Cristina Churruca
