Chapter 18 Section 1 Review • NATO (North Atlantic Treaty Organization)- a defensive military alliance formed in 1949 by ten Western European countries, the US and Canada • Truman Doctrine- U.S. policy of providing economic and military aid to free nations threatened by internal or external opponents • Marshall Plan- U.S. program to supply economic aid to European nations to help them rebuild after WWII

  3. THE COLD WAR ENTERS EAST ASIA • End of WWII Chinese Civil War • U.S. sends $2 Billion in Aid • 1949-Communism People’s Republic of China • After the Fall • USSR 1949- First atomic weapon • PRC + USSR= treaty of friendship and alliance • More Communist Revolutions? • JAPAN!

  4. THE KOREAN WAR • After WWII • USA= South (*38th parallel) • Soviets= North- built large well equipped army • Cold War-no reunification • UN Intervenes • Communist invasion of South Korea= test of containment policy
