    3. Will no one tell me what she sings?11 —Perhaps the plaintive numbers12 flowFor old, unhappy, far-off things,And battles long ago: Or is it some more humble lay13,Familiar matter of to-day?Some natural sorrow, loss, or pain,That has been, and may be again?Whate'er the theme, the Maiden sangAs if her song could have no ending;I saw her singing at her work,And o'er the sickle bending14; —I listened, motionless and still; And, as I mounted up the hill,The music in my heart I bore15,Long after it was heard no more. 11. Will no one tell me what she sings: The poet does not understand the language of the Erse.12. numbers: song13. lay: poem meant to be sung 14. O'er the sickle bending: Bending over the sickle 15. The music in my heart I bore: I bore the music in my heart. The Solitary Reaper

    4. The Solitary Reaper • This poem is not completely out of the poet's experiences. It was suggested by Thomas Wilkison's Tour in the Highlands. It is a typical poem of Wordsworth, which shows his belief in common people, his emphasizing the use of simple language really spoken by men and his idea that all good poetry should be a spontaneous overflow of powerful feelings. In the poem the poet seems to indicate that what comes from the common people is of beauty and can last long in people's mind. The poem is written in iambic tetrameter with its rhyme scheme of each stanza ababccdd.

The Solitary Reaper

The Solitary Reaper
