  1. Amelia Earhart…….. …the unsolved mystery.

  2. The Situation • 1937 – Amelia Earhart attempt an around-the-world flight (with navigator Fred Noonan) • Oakland – Oakland • Successfully made it to New Guinea • New Guinea – Howland Island, a 22000 mile stretch (longest and most dangerous leg) • Never made it to Howland Island

  3. Four Major Theories Castaway Theory Marshall Island Theory Ameila Earhart as a Spy Theory Crash and sink Theory

  4. Earhart crash landed on Gardner Island, a small island 350 miles away from Howland Island There her and Noonan lived as castaways for a short amount of time until they died from disease, starvation, or some other unknown cause. Castaway theory

  5. Gardner Island now know as Nikumaroro

  6. Group know as TIGHAR investigated the island and found : • Partial skeleton believed to be Earhart • Woman’s shoe dating back to the 1930’s • Scraps of metal • Natives reporting of a plane wreck there before 1939 Evidence to support Castaway theory

  7. Skeleton was deemed to be of a short stocky male, and has now disappeared Shoe size did not match Earhart’s Still no conclusive evidence to support her or her navigator being there Conflicting Evidence

  8. Marshall Island Theory and Spy theory • “ ‘If she couldn't find Howland, plan B was to cut off communications and head for the Marshall Islands and ditch her airplane there,’ said Rollin C. Reineck, a retired U.S. Air Force colonel who lives in Kailua, Hawaii” (Where is Amelia). • It is also believed that she landed there on purpose so the U.S. would be able to search these Japanese islands for military installations

  9. Marshall Island Theory and Spy theories cont. • Earhart is believed to have been executed on these Japanese held islands • Or…..she went back to the U.S. under the Alias Irene Bolam

  10. Supporting Evidence • Numerous eye witness accounts of locals and U.S. miltitants • A briefcase with Earhart’s visas and passports found • Age progressive impression of Earhart and Irene Bolam

  11. Conflicting evidence, or lack there of • Of all the eye witness accounts, there is no physical proof or Earhart ever being there. • Briefcase was never found or proven that it existed. • Age progressive photo of Earhart and Bolam was proven invalid.

  12. Crash and Sink Theory • Amelia Earhart’s plane simply ran out of fuel before reaching Howland Island and crashed into the Pacific.

  13. Supporting Evidence • Multiple Communication errors, and Earhart left her Morse code equipment behind. • Storm and strong headwind forced her to a higher altitude and more fuel consumption • Plane was extremely heavy. • . “The plane was so heavy on takeoff she wasn't sure even to the end if she could get it off the runway” (The Mystery of).

  14. Supporting Evidence Cont. • 19 hours in she reported “cannot see you but gas is running low” • Last transmission was an hour later, but was not able to be clearly heard.

  15. Conflicting Evidence • There has been extensive searching for her plane, but has yet to be found.

  16. CONCLUSION • No one knows definitively what happened to Earhart. • The U.S. position is that it crashed and sank. • Common sense tells me the same thing.
