  6. IBM Smarter Cities Challenge Program IBM has selected 100 cities worldwide to receive Smarter Cities Challenge grants. Cities were chosen through a competitive process after identifying top priorities for collaboration with IBM. • When selecting the Smarter Cities Challenge grant recipients, several key criteria were considered. • The cities had to be prepared to match IBM's investment with their own commitment of time and resources. • Proposals articulating pressing urban concerns that could be addressed by implementing *smarter* technologies and processes rose to the top of the list. • Access to publicly available data that could leverage the capabilities of City Forward was an important consideration. • And cities that demonstrated a solid track record of innovative problem solving were also viewed favourably. Numerous African cities were selected, such as… Nairobi, Kenya Accra, Ghana Rabat, Morocco Tshwane, South Africa

  8. The problem statement for the Cape Town Challenge… Oveviw How can the City of Cape Town effectively use and manage its social assets to optimise service delivery? Mayor Patricia De Lille. The City of Cape Town has partnered with IBM for a project to assist with the optimisation of service delivery. • “We are launching an exciting project here today that will take place over the next three weeks. However, we hope that the outcome produced at the end of that time will ultimately have long-term effects for the city,” said Patricia De Lille, mayor of the City of Cape Town, at the launch of the partnership. • De Lille said: “The City of Cape Town is this year’s beneficiary of an IBM Smart Cities grant. This grant is awarded to a city selected for a project that is run by IBM and its staff at no cost to the city.” • The mayor said this in essence enables the city to select a business problem it wants to address, which will then be worked on by a “high-level, world class team” in just under a month. • This was described by De Lille as an “incredible bargain” for the city, with the city not obligated to do business with IBM once the project is complete. • …http://www.humanipo.com/news/33810/city-of-cape-town-partners-with-ibm-to-optimise-service-delivery/#! 8

  15. Design Thinking Findings Next steps Recommendations Overview Definition A five-step inclusive methodology for complex problem solving that fosters innovation and leads to creative solutions. Outcomes Provides a common framework for complex problem solving that encourages maximum input participation, including citizen & community input, in the ideation of complex problem solving. Importance / Relevancy A systematic, innovative approach to complex problem solving that allows new ways to think about solving old problems. It has at its core inclusiveness that drives integrated, citizen-centric solutions. Hasso Plattner Institute of Design at Stanford 15 15 15

  16. Design Thinking Methodology • Show Don’t Tell • Create Clarity from Complexity • Be Mindful of Process • Collaborate Across Boundaries • Bias Toward Action • Get Experimental and Experiential • Focus on Human Values
