  1. Active & Passive Voice Understanding a writer’s tone.

  2. Passive Voice • Although the passive voice is not any less correct than the active voice, it is less direct, less forceful, and less concise. • Passive voice requires more words to express a thought. • A sentence written in passive voice sounds weak.

  3. Active Voice • Active voice uses strong verbs • It also has the subject of the sentence doing the action. • Whereas in passive voice, the action is done on the subject. • Or the subject is not involved at all.

  4. Examples • Passive Voice: The ball washit over the outfield fence by Jody. • Active Voice: Jody hit the ball over the outfield fence.

  5. More Examples • Passive Voice: The totals for the new budget were carefully checked. • Active Voice: The club treasurer carefully checked the totals for the new budget.

  6. More Examples • Passive Voice: A salmon was caught by the brown bear. • Active Voice: The brown bear caught a salmon. • Passive voice: The song will be sung by the choir. • Active: The choir sang the song.

  7. Identify Active or Passive voice • Ginger at the last piece of cornbread. • The last piece of the puzzle was added by Leroy. • The mail carrier heard the child crying. • The semifinal match had been won by the Charleston Chargers.
