  2. Welcome to a different class • Main Goals: • Tours • Learn to view the world from a different perspective • Have Fun

  3. If you like: • Being Outside • Grade school kids • Critical thinking/Problem solving • Then this class is a good fit for you

Believe it or not???? • Everything we do in class has a purpose – (lots of what we do is focused on getting prepared for our grade school guests) • Tours happen in October, then start right after Spring break and last through the first week of May • During the winter we will be focused on learning about: Human Population issues, Ecology, Energy issues, reading Ishmael, by Daniel Quinn, Evolution • For the next seven weeks we will focus on getting ready for grade school tours and also spend a little time learning about . . . .

Birds of Kansas! • Ecomeet 2011 • Ernie Miller Nature Center – Wednesday, October 26 • If you qualify’ state will be held at Camp Wood the next week (Thursday, Nov. 3rd) • We have had good success every year: • 2008:  1st and 2nd at regionals, 10th and 16th at state • 2009:  2nd at regionals, 4th at state • 2010:  2nd at regionals, 11th at state • 2011:  ??????, ??????

  6. Ecomeet consists of: • 100 question, multiple choice (a, b, c, d) test over Birds of Kansas – Identification and information about birds that inhabit Kansas • 100 question, multiple choice (a, b, c, d) test over Woodland Habitat – Identification and information about fish, mammals, herps, inverts that are native to Kansas • Team Scavenger Hunt • Team Interpretive Skit

To Qualify for the Ecomeet: • Learn as much as you can about the birds of Kansas while in class and outside of class (Moodle) • Learn as much as you can about the other animal life found in Kansas (Moodle) • You will need to be one of the twelve high scores out of slightly more than 100 students taking the qualifying test sometime the beginning of October. • Everyone is a winner! – even if you do not qualify you will have learned a whole bunch about native creatures and plants in Kansas by participating (it’s also part of your class grade)

  8. Grades in Env. Ed. • Approximately 50/50% in class activity/tests • No written homework but you are expected to study what we are learning about at home from notes/computer • The next time we meet plan on going outside and learning how to identify common trees in the SMESL
