Respondents to the environmental scan offered the following recommendations : • Develop a central process for referrals and information provision • Increase awareness of what services exist and how to access them • to parents • the community • internal stakeholders/health care service providers • external stakeholders/health care service providers • Formalize information sharing and coordination between organizations

Respondents to the environmental scan offered the following recommendations : • Clarify or modify eligibility criteria for children’s therapy services to be to be less restrictive • Establish a process with set criteria to priorize referrals • Establish evidence based outcomes for measuring progress • Increase direct therapy service providers & satellite sites to deliver services

Respondents to the environmental scan offered the following recommendations : • Address services to children: • experiencing “milder” needs • under 3 ½ needing SLP services • who are home-schooled or attend private school • during summer months/Spring break, Christmas • directly in the child’s home • Universal Infant Screening • OT & PT preschool screening & service provision

Work to date… • Terms of Reference were created • Service Delivery Plan was created based on the Environmental Scan • First targeting improving preschool services • Developed a bilingual referral form & trilingual consent form • Currently being piloted by Border Land School Division • Hired Transitional Coordinator • Referral Flow Chart has been drafted

  9. Work to date… Improved communication & trust between partners • Commitment from partners to make a difference Received funding to assist the planned project activities

Work to date… S-CTI created a 15 mo. term 0.5 FTE preschool SLP position and partnered with SMD to administer position along with previous 0.5 POTC position in region so SMD able to hire into a full time position to: • helps address long preschool wait lists • increase likelihood  of staff retention/job stability • increase potential for enhanced efficiencies reducing travel time & costs

  11. Work to date… Commitment to improving preschool OT/PT services where there have been gaps • Enhancing Stars of the Future program Up until now, Stars of the Future has included: 3 ½ year old screening for: • Speech & Language (SLP) • Hearing Loss (PHNs) • General Development (PHNs)

Work to date… Commitment to improving preschool OT/PT services where there have been gaps • Enhancing Stars of the Future program • This Spring OT/PT screening has been added • 3 ½ year olds will now be screened for: • Speech & Language (SLP) • Motor & behaviour deficits (OT/PT) • Hearing Loss (PHNs) • General Health (PHNs)

  13. Work to date… New eligibility criteria have been agreed to : • “an identified need for assessment and/or intervention to assist a child to reach their full potential in the areas of hearing, speech, language, movement, learning, self-care and social development”

  14. Next Steps… • Expand preschool early intervention & screening to address the gaps identified in the Environmental Scan • Define & develop centralized intake system (database & communication strategy)
