  2. Microscope Notes

  3. Microscope Functions: • 1. Eyepiece: Look through to view a specimen, magnifies an object 10x.

  4. 2. Coarse adjustment: Moves the stage up and down. Used for focusing on low and medium power ONLY!

  5. 3. Fine adjustment: Brings objects into clear, sharp focus.

  6. 4. Arm: Supports the body tube and used for carrying the microscope.

  7. 5. Base: Supports the microscope.

  8. 6. Lamp: Lights up the specimen being viewed.

  9. 7. Diaphragm:Controls the amount of light entering through the stage opening.

  10. 1=little light to 5=most light

  11. 8. Stage:Supports the slide being viewed.

  12. 9. Stage clips:Holds the slide in place on the stage.

  13. 10. Body tube: Maintains the proper distance between the eyepiece and the objective lenses.

  14. OBJECTIVE LENSES • 11. Low power objective lens :magnifies the specimen 4x (40x total mag. )

  15. 12. Medium power objective lens : magnifies the specimen 10x (100x total)

  16. 13. High power objective lens : magnifies the specimen 40x (400x total)

  17. 14. Nosepiece : Holds the objective lenses and can be rotated to change magnification.

  18. 15. Aperture :The opening in the stage that allows light through.

  19. 16.Slide :Thin piece of glass where specimens are mounted.

  20. Tips to Remember when focusing... • Always move the lenses in order when focusing! Low > Medium > High • Change your diaphragm opening occasionally to help you see better! • Move the slide around on the stage until you find what you’re looking for, then clip it into place.

  21. Microscope Rules...

  22. 1. Always carry the microscope with two (2) hands! Use one hand on the arm and one on the base.

  23. 2. Never use the coarse adjustment knob on high-power.

  24. 3. Put the microscope away on low power when finished.

  25. COOL DEAL KIDS... NOW GO HAVE SOME MICROSCOPE FUN!

  26. A Light Microscope...The Tool of the Life Scientist! err, err, err....

  27. van Leeuwenhoek Microscope

  28. Microscope Quiz • You need to know all the parts • of the microscope and their • functions. • Study your Microscope Notes!!
