  1. SWRCMP Phase I Review Nathan Sykes Plymouth Coastal Observatory

  2. Hydrodynamic Services (Waves & Tides) • Wave buoys • 6 Directional Waveriders deployed originally • External contributions • Efficiency savings • Extra 6 deployed (plus 1 spare) making total of 12 wave buoys around the coast • Tide gauges • 2 WaveRex tide gauges originally deployed • External contributions • Efficiency savings • Extra 2 gauges deployed (1 WaveRex and 1 Etrometa Step Gauge) and 1 changed from WaveRex to Etrometa Step Gauge making total of 4 tide gauges around the coast

  3. Bathymetric Surveys • Full bathymetric coverage from Portland Bill to Second Severn Crossing • Unexpected weather meant it took 5 years to complete • Multibeam surveys for Lyme Bay (Portland Bill to Torquay) and Mounts Bay • Singlebeam surveys for rest of coastline • Annual singlebeam surveys of Exe and Teign estuaries • Multibeam for Exe estuary 2010 survey

  4. Topographic Surveys • Full topographic surveys for all original management units • Initial baseline survey • Annual baseline (BMP) survey if designated • 1 or 2 interim surveys per year • Partner requests • Efficiency savings • New surveys for management units around mouth of Taw / Torridge estuary including annual baseline surveys • 6 sites changed to include annual baseline surveys

  5. LiDAR Surveys • Unexpected weather caused alterations to original survey plan • Entire coastline has at least 1 flight • Most places have 2 flights • Many places have 3 flights • Several places have 5 flights

  6. Aerial Photography • 2 full sets of orthorectified aerial photography • Unexpected weather caused delays in data collection • 2006, 2007 & 2008 first set • 2009 & 2010 second set

  7. Habitat Mapping • Entire coastline coverage • Mapping based on Aerial Photograph Interpretation • Photos flown 2006 – 2009 • pdf’s on website and shapefiles available to mastermap licence holders

  8. Summary • Did we achieve what we set out to achieve? • Mostly yes, but we also collected more than we set out to collect • Extras • Dawlish Warren multibeam • Software • Survey kit • Cliff-top mapping • Laser scanning • Historic aerial photography
