Chapter 4 Section 1 Understanding Rock
Understanding Rock • Rock is simply a solid mixture of crystals of one or more minerals. • The rock cycle is the process by which one rock type changes into another. • Any of the major rock types can turn into any other type of rock or turn back into the same type of rock again • Some of the scalpels used today are made from obsidian.
Understanding Rock • We use rock for tools, buildings, decoration, roads, sidewalks, and many other things. • Magma is a hot liquid that forms when rock partially or completely melts (underground) • Igneous rock is magma or lava that cools and solidifies • Sedimentary rock is rock that forms from rock sediments that are compacted and cemented together
Understanding Rock • Metamorphic Rock is rock that forms when the texture and composition of a preexisting rock is changed by heat or pressure deep underground
The Nitty-Gritty on Rock Classification • Composition is the minerals a rock is made of • Texture is determined by the size, shapes, and positions of the grains of which it is made of.
