  1. How to determine the need for a colour blindness treatment? Colour blindness can occur when your child is unable to view colours normally and can also be regarded as colour deficiency. This situation arises when your child is unable to differentiate between certain colours like - greens, reds, blues, etc. When you notice such an issue, you will be worried about achieving the best colour blindness treatment. However, in reality, options for colour blindness treatment in India are quite limited. How to determine if your kid has colour blindness? Before understanding the causes and treatment of colour blindness, let's understand about the impact of colour blindness - In the retina, rods and cones are primarily responsible for detection of light and brain processes and differentiates these shades. The rods are sensitive cells that help you to see in low light levels but cones detect colour and can concentrate near the centre of the vision. These are of three types i.e. Red, Green and Blue and deliver input to our brain. Before seeking treatment for colour blindness, it is important to determine the missing or defective cones in the child's eye. A severe case can be present when all three cones are missing. Depending on the type of cones missing from the eye, your child can have mild to severe blindness. The issue impacts both the eyes and temporary treatment of colour blindness can help to manage the routine tasks. Is it possible to detect the issue minus clinical diagnosis? You can take into consideration the various telltale signs of the issue. Your kid may have trouble detecting certain colours despite having a normal vision. Look for the following signs of the issue - Inability to differentiate between specific colours and shades of Red, Green and Blue. Facing trouble with drawing assignments or other projects that use colours Irritability or frustration in not seeing certain colours Are teased by peers about their lack of colour recognition. To manage the situation and to aid with the homework, choose the following strategies - Write in black and avoid using coloured pencils of these shades. Make homework notes or printouts with high black and white contrast. Use patterns to help them recognise colours or use name of colours to help them understand about these shades. Who is at risk for such issues?

  2. Males are at higher risk of developing this issue than females. It is estimated that one in every ten kids can suffer from this issue. However, in adults, these issues can arise due to the following problems - Glaucoma Chronic alcoholism Diabetes Sickle cell anaemia Alzheimer's disease Parkinson's disease, etc. Certain drugs may also cause increase in the colour blindness and these include the following - Hydroxychloroquine Drugs for treatment of rheumatoid arthritis, etc. Are there available treatments of colour blindness in India? Sadly, the options for treatment of colour blindness in India are limited. Further, congenital colour blindness can hardly be treated effectively. However, coloured lenses can help to reduce problems in routine life. Another breakthrough treatment is delivered at Sanjeevan eye care where stimulation strategies are used to promote the functioning of the cones. However, prior assessment of the underlying causes is done before beginning with the treatment plans.
