"The most effective vaccine against child death in Africa is a glass of clean water." Kevin Watkins- Author of the UN Human Development Report-November, 2006
Purification Techniques • Boiling • Chlorination • Filtration • Settling • Solar Disinfection (SODIS)
SODIS (Solar Water Disinfection) • Pioneer work in early 1980s by Afrim Acra at University of Beirut in Lebanon • For the past 20 years, most of the work has been done by SANDEC/EAWAG, a Swiss government sponsored technical foundation in Zurich.
Conclusions • E. coli count reduced to zero in 1 full day of sun or 2 days if cloudy • No difference between clear and half black painted bottles • No difference with shaking • Results good on any hard surface, but best on corrugate metal • Rate of reduction most dramatic in first 2 hours • 10 am to 2 pm are the most critical hours
Kisoro SODIS Pilot Project 2004 Selected 24 families with following criteria • Five or more children in the family • No source of clean water • Documented history of water borne disease
Results of Pilot Project • Within a few weeks, children’s symptoms (stomach ache, diarrhea, dysentery, etc.) began to disappear • School attendance improved • Physical appearance of children changed • Mothers of children became advocates and began teaching their neighbours
Sustainability • Will the community continue to use the process? • What steps can we take to ensure sustainability?
Actions Taken • Created the water SCH2OOL Canada to focus on teaching the Kisoro model to implementing partners. Also, to fundraise in Canada. • Helped create the water SCH2OOL Uganda and staffed with Ugandans to expand the projects within the country. • Hired program director, training coordinator, and three senior trainers in Uganda.
