  1. Five Keys to College Success

  2. Be honest with yourself. Know why you’re here. • What are some reasons for college? -- career and job training -- family and society expectations -- putting off the “real” world -- educating yourself in the liberal arts tradition

  3. Be here now. • Nothing else in your life will provide you with the opportunities for growth and development in the same way that your time in college can. • Whatever else you do, stay focused on the task at hand – getting the most knowledge, experience, enlightenment out of your classes, professors, classmates. • Don’t blow the opportunity to grow.

  4. Be Active! • College is not a spectator sport! • Don’t be a lump in the classroom. • Take advantage of the cultural/artistic opportunities. • Join clubs and organizations in your discipline. • Take an active interest in student government.

  5. Ask Questions! • Be a critical thinker. • Challenge, question, poke, prod, investigate, contemplate, discuss, observe, ruminate. • Take every opportunity to push back the borders. • Do new stuff, meet different people, let your curiosity guide you toward adventures.

  6. Be prepared • Read! • Write! • Study! • Get involved! • Get excited about learning! • Take responsibility for your actions. • Challenge yourself to open up, to grow, to change.
