  1. What is an Idiom? An Idiom is an expression, word, or phrase that has a figurative meaning that is different from the literal meaning or definition of the words of which it is made. There are estimated to be at least 25,000 idiomatic expressions in the English language.

  2. Deutsche Idiome Teil I Ichhabe den Fadenverloren. I have lost my train of thought. (Meaning – I forgot what I was saying) Literal German: I have lost my thread. (derFaden – the thread)

  3. Das kommtnicht in Frage. That is out of the question. (Meaning – it is not even to be considered.) Literal German: That comes not into question. (fragen – to ask)

  4. Du hast den Nagel auf dem Kopf getroffen. You hit the nail on the head. (Meaning – That is exactly right / correct.) Literal German: You have hit the nail on the head. (treffen – to hit / to meet)

  5. AndereLänder, andereSitten. When in Rome, do as the Romans do. (Meaning – different people have different customs) Literal German: different (other) countries, different (other) customs

  6. Er hat das durch die blumegesagt. He has said that in a roundabout way. (Meaning – He didn’t speak directly to the issue) Literal German: He said that through the flower.

  7. Ich bin ganzOhr. I am all ears. (Meaning – you have my full attention) Literal German: I am all ear.

  8. Es ärgertmich, wieerdauernd ins Wortfällt. It annoys me, how he is constantly interrupting. (Meaning – to always be breaking in on a conversation) Literal German: It annoys me, how he is constantly falling into the word.

  15. Du beißt auf Granit. You are banging your head against the wall. (Meaning – You are getting nowhere) Literal German: You are biting granite.

  16. Nun istguter Rat teuer. It’s hard to know what to do. (Meaning – It is a difficult decision) Literal German: Now, good advice is expensive.

  17. ErwirdüberLeichengehen. He will stop at nothing. (Meaning – There is nothing that will stop him) Literal German: He will go over corpses.
