  6. Geography Burma is slightly smaller than Texas It is bordered by Bangladesh, China, India, Laos and Thailand Last year a tropical cyclone killed over 20,000 people and left over a million people homeless Deforestation is not currently an environmental issue

Government History • In 1990 national elections were held for parliament, and the military junta recognized the results • Since 1962 Burma has been ruled by military governments that have been accused of corruption, heroin trafficking, and human rights violations • In 1988 military forces killed more than 1,000 pro-democracy demonstrators • In 1997, the military junta changed its name to the State Peace and Development Council (SPDC), but didn’t change its policy of autocratic control and repression of the democratic opposition

Economy • Burma is one of the poorest countries in Asia • 70% of the labor force is occupied with agriculture • The Burmese government is fully complying with the minimum standards for the elimination of trafficking in persons (slave labor/domestic servitude) • Burma is the world’s second largest producer of illicit opium

People The population in Burma consists of over 48,000,000 people Karen is the largest ethnic group in Burma The country's religions are made up of 89% Buddhist, 4% Christian, 4% Muslim, 1% Animist, and 2% Other Burmese citizens are at a very high risk of contracting major infectious diseases, including HIV/AIDS and hepatitis

Language • The primary language of school instruction is English, with Burmese being the secondary language taught • There are 107 different languages spoken in Burma • The official language is Burmese and is spoken by approximately 65% of the population • Both the Karen and Burmese alphabets consist of separate characters representing individual sounds
