  1. Satan Hindered Us Pt. 1 Text: I Thess. 2:17-18 Scripture Reading: I Pet. 5:8-9

  2. Intro Have you ever felt hindered by something or by someone? Satan stands at the ready to hinder the people of God I Thess. 2:17-18 17. But we, brethren, having been taken away from you for a short while--in person, not in spirit--were all the more eager with great desire to see your face. 18. For we wanted to come to you--I, Paul, more than once--and yet Satan hindered us. Satan is good at hindering! Satan Hindered Us Pt. 1

  3. Intro If he was successful in hindering the apostle Paul, we should certainly take guard against his attempts to hinder us in doing those things which are right I Pet. 5:8-9 8. Be of sober spirit, be on the alert. Your adversary, the devil, prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour. 9. But resist him, firm in your faith, knowing that the same experiences of suffering are being accomplished by your brethren who are in the world. What are some tactics or means which Satan uses in his efforts to hinder men? Satan Hindered Us Pt. 1

  4. Satan Hinders By Encouraging: Diversions Diverts from the gospel message to save – II Cor. 4:4 Diverts with the passing pleasures of the world – I Jn. 2:15-17 Diverts with friendship of the world – Js. 4:4 Js. 4:4 4. You adulteresses, do you not know that friendship with the world is hostility toward God? Therefore whoever wishes to be a friend of the world makes himself an enemy of God. Saints are to be aware of the schemes (KJV/NKJ: “devices”) of the devil! (II Cor. 2:11) Satan Hindered Us Pt. 1

  5. Satan Hinders By Encouraging: Delusions • Satan has the art of making men believe that something is • the truth when it is actually a lie • Jesus warned of delusions taught by false prophets – Mt. 7:15 • Some faithful are deceived by “craftiness” and turn from devotion to Christ • (II Cor. 11:3) Mt. 7:15 15. "Beware of the false prophets, who come to you in sheep's clothing, but inwardly are ravenous wolves. Satan Hindered Us Pt. 1

  6. Satan Hinders By Encouraging: Delusions • Satan continues to hinder individuals from receiving the • truth by promoting false teachers (false doctrines, lies) • Satan has his ministers (false teachers), who preach doctrines which appear true, but they are only delusions of truth – II Cor. 11:13-15 II Cor. 11:13-15 13. For such men are false apostles, deceitful workers, disguising themselves as apostles of Christ. 14. No wonder, for even Satan disguises himself as an angel of light. 15. Therefore it is not surprising if his servants also disguise themselves as servants of righteousness, whose end will be according to their deeds. • The parable of the sower portrays such tactics of the devil – Lk. 8:12 • Satan uses numerous methods of taking the word out of the hearts of men, lest they should believe and be saved – II Thess. 2:8-12 • The Galatians bought a lie and were hindered • (Gal. 1:6-7; 5:7) • Some are deluded by human philosophy (Rom. 1:22-25) Saints must hold fast to the word of truth! (I Tim. 6:12; II Tim. 1:13) Satan Hindered Us Pt. 1

  7. Satan Hinders By Encouraging: Doubt God does not want His people to live in doubt concerning truth and error (II Tim. 2:15; Heb. 5:14) • Satan desires that men possess doubtful minds • throughout their lives for doubt can cause misery • Peter rebuked for his doubt and failing to walk on the water – Mt. 14:31 • Peter rebuked for doubting all that Jesus would suffer – Mt. 16:21-23 • Thomas doubted that Christ rose from the dead – Jn. 20:24-29 • One’s prayers could be hindered by doubting – Js. 1:5-8 (Js. 5:16) Js. 1:5-8 5. But if any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all generously and without reproach, and it will be given to him. 6. But he must ask in faith without any doubting, for the one who doubts is like the surf of the sea, driven and tossed by the wind. 7. For that man ought not to expect that he will receive anything from the Lord, 8. being a double-minded man, unstable in all his ways. • Satan desires to hinder all men in doing the will of God • (I Pet. 5:8) Satan Hindered Us Pt. 1

  8. Satan Hinders By Encouraging: Doubt Infallible evidence is given by the gospel writers that one might believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God without doubting Jn. 20:30-31 30. Therefore many other signs Jesus also performed in the presence of the disciples, which are not written in this book; 31. but these have been written so that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God; and that believing you may have life in His name. Saints would be ineffective if living in doubt, so let us be strengthened in our faith! (I Jn. 5:4) Satan Hindered Us Pt. 1

  9. Conclusion • Paul and those with him were hindered by Satan in • coming to the Thessalonians (I Thess. 2:18) • We may not know what method Satan used to produce the hindrance, but he knows how to hinder and is very subtle with his efforts. • II Cor. 11:3: “But I am afraid that, as the serpent deceived Eve by his craftiness, your minds will be led astray from the simplicity and purity of devotion to Christ.” • Saints ought to take warning and be ready to resist him • Js. 4:7; I Pet. 5:9: Satan can be resisted! • Eph. 6:11, 13, 16: We can stand firm in our faith (as with a shield!) Eph. 6:11 Put on the full armor of God, so that you will be able to stand firm against the schemes of the devil. Satan Hindered Us Pt. 1

  10. Conclusion To not be ignorant of his schemes, we must be “wise as serpents and harmless as doves” (Mt. 10:16) If Satan tried to hinder Jesus (Mt. 4), and hindered His apostles (Judas, Peter, Thomas, Paul), saints today are still targets Let us not be deceived by Satan’s “craftiness” (II Cor. 11:3) but be ever vigilant in our faith to take hold of truth (Col. 1:5)and hold fast what is good! (I Thess. 5:21) Satan Hindered Us Pt. 1

  11. “What Must I Do To Be Saved?” Hear The Gospel (Jn. 5:24; Rom. 10:17) Believe In Christ (Jn. 3:16-18; Jn. 8:24) Repent Of Sins (Lk. 13:35; Acts 2:38) Confess Christ (Mt. 10:32; Rom. 10:10) Be Baptized (Mk. 16:16; Acts 22:16) Remain Faithful (Jn. 8:31; Rev. 2:10) For The Erring Child: Repent (Acts 8:22), Confess (I Jn. 1:9), Pray (Acts 8:22)
