  2. Gabrielle-Emilie Le Tonnelier de Breteuil • Born December 17th 1706. • Duaghter to Louis Nicolas Le Tonnelier de Breteuil (see right) and Gabrielle Anne de Froulay • Her father, Louis Nicolas Le Tonnelier de Breteuil, was and official of the court of Luis XIV at Versailles.

  3. Childhood • When Gabrielle-Emilie le Tonnelier de Breteuil was nine, her family moved from Versailles to and estate in Paris. • Le Tonnelier de Breteuil was tall and strong. • She was described as being very energetic and clumsy. • Teenage Emilie

  4. Given lessons in fencing, horseback riding, and gymnastics. • While at the Persian estate Gabielle-EmilieleTonnelier de Breteuil Studied Latin, Italian and English.

  5. Adulthood • Married Marquise Florent-Claude Chastellet on The 20th of June in 1725. • He was named govenor of Semuren Auxois in Burgundy and had little time to spend with Gabrielle-Emilie Madame la Marquise du Chastellet.

  6. du Chastellet’s husband supported her pursuit of knowledge and encouraged her to expand upon her knowledge. • Du Chastellet favored philosophy science and mathematics.

  7. Around 1734, Du Chastellet met Voltaire who gave her the nick name Emilie du Chatelet. • Du Chatelet had already had many lovers by this time including her math tutor Pierre Louis Maupertuis(see right).
