What not to SAY • No recipes, celebrity gossip, fashion tips, wedding obsession, fandom, child-rearing, crafts, hobbies, etc. (imply distractions from work). • Nothing negative about yourself (e.g., “I’m not a social media expert.“). • Nothing unprofessional (e.g., “This is the first time I’ve written a blog/made a web site/tweeted”). • Nothing about your social media addiction (e.g., “I’m on social media all day long”). • Nothing boring or self-centered • Nothing controversial (e.g., religious, political, unless it reflects leadership). • Nothing too personal (e.g., “I have two cats and my brother’s in rehab.”). • When in doubt, ask the questions: • “Does this content represent me as an expert in my field?” • Could this web content contribute to an employer’s bottom line or knowledge of his or her field?”
