  2. What is Moonshine? • Moonshine is distilled liquor, most common is corn liquor (Moonshine.). (Tennessee Moonshine in a Mason Jar)

  3. Where does the “X” come from? • “The “XXX” signifies how many times the moonshine batch had been run through the still” (What Does the XXX on Moonshine Jugs Mean).

  5. What is a Still? • A Still is the instrument used to process mash into drinkable alcohol. (Outdoors)

  6. Components of a Still • Mash • Worm • Worm box • Bucket • Cold water • Thump keg* (Grabianowski)

  7. What is Mash? • Mash is the mixture of all your ingredients. • Mash can be made from: corn, Rye, fruits, different types of sugar, yeast, water. (Carolina ShineFest 2011)

  8. Worm? • The worm is a coiled length of pipe that winds down the inside of the worm box (Tim Smith Moonshine). • The worm box is a crate or barrel into which cold water from a nearby water source is pumped, flowing into the top and then back out the bottom (Tim Smith Moonshine). • This keeps the worm bathed in constantly circulating cold water, which condenses the alcohol steam into liquid (Tim Smith Moonshine).

  9. How the Process Works • Yeast and sugar is added to the mash • Yeast breaks down the glucose in the mash to make ethyl alcohol • Mash is heated to evaporate the ethyl • The worm box condenses the ethyl steam, into liquid ethyl

  11. Whiskey Vs Brandy • Whiskey is made from corn, with a clear color and strong kick • Brandy is made from fruits, with a colored look and a mild kick

  22. Why it’s Illegal • Moonshine is untaxable by the Federal Government, making it illegal to make and sell

  23. NASCAR was born • Nascar in a nutshell was born from moonshiner because the bootleggers would modify their cars to out run the law. • Having these fast cars, soon became something moonshiners would race against one another, those making Nascar.
