Introduction The purpose of the Metadata Working Group is to: • Promotes awareness and best practices among FGDC member agencies and other interested stakeholders about the metadata component of geospatial data • Facilitates the coordination, development, use, sharing, and dissemination of geospatial metadata • Supports the implementation of geospatial metadata and other related semantic and structural (e.g., non-geospatial) metadata standards established by Federal, National and International Standards organizations such as the FGDC, Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC), American National Standards Institute (ANSI), International Organization for Standardization (ISO), Dublin Core Metadata Initiative (DCMI), Open Source Metadata Framework (OMF), Ecological Metadata Language (EML), and the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C).

  7. NGDA Data Themes and Data Sets The Metadata Working Group is a cross cutting team and so all of the NGDA Data Themes and Data Sets are represented

Recent Meetings • The Metadata Working Group met September 25, 2013* • The topics discussed at this meeting include: • Status of ISO 19115-1 Geographic Information - Metadata – Part 1: Fundamentals • Status of ISO Metadata Editor Review • Discuss upcoming ISO Metadata Standards Implementation Forum • Some of the outcomes arising from this meeting include: • Increase understanding of status and relations among ISO metadata standards • Continue community discussion around ISO metadata standards implementation * Meeting summaries and presentations available at: http://www.fgdc.gov/participation/working-groups-subcommittees/mwg/index_html

Recent Developments/Projects • Federal Metadata Coordinator Webinar: ISO Metadata Implementation (Complete) • Purpose: help Federal agency metadata coordinators become current on ISO geo metadata standards and provide practical guidance for implementing ISO metadata in their agencies • Held on April 16-17, 2013 • 46 participants representing 14 agencies registered • FGDC Secretariat, NOAA, EPA, USGS and Census cooperative effort • Provide foundational information and training materials about ISO standards • Develop ISO standards implementation strategies within federal agencies (e.g., sharing case studies) • Materials and recording available after Webinar at FGDC site

Recent Developments/Projects • Metadata Working Group Charter (Complete) • Released Final Charter in July 2013 • ISO Frequently Asked Questions (in progress) • This FAQ is in progress and has been maintained since the 2011 Metadata Summit and covers a variety of topics related to ISO metadata standards. The document will be incorporated into the upcoming FGDC ISO web page redesign • Fundamental conduit for ISO updates (ongoing) • This Working Group regularly discusses ISO activities

Recent Developments/Projects • ISO Metadata Implementation Forum (in progress) • Purpose: A quarterly webinar information forum for the presentation and discussion of ISO metadata implementation shared experiences, strategies, topics, and resources • Audience: FGDC Metadata Working Group & Webinar Participants • Presenters: Experts based on community interest areas • Anticipated Outcomes • ISO metadata implementation community of practice in GeoPlatform • Each session documented and published as online learning module • Inform the ISO transition efforts • Topics • Standards • Tools/Transforms/Validation/Publication • Case Studies/Workflow Model

  16. Next Meeting • The next meeting of the Metadata Working Group will be held in December 2013 or January 2014. It will take place via teleconference • Some of the topics to be discussed at the next meeting include: • Updates on ISO Metadata Editor Tool Review • Share information about ISO Metadata Standards • Update on the ISO Metadata Implementation Forum

Next Steps • In the coming months, the MWG hopes to discuss the following metadata program activities: • Release ISO Metadata Editor Review; Publish ISO FAQ; Update ISO component on FGDC Website; Release updated Metadata Curriculum • Establish ISO Metadata Implementation Series to help serve broader communities across MWG membership • Support ISO 19115 / Open Data Policy metadata template creation • Identify MWG crosscuts with NGDA. Proposed activities • Metadata templates for NGDA themes developed in coordination with theme leads • Promote NGDA themes as metadata theme keywords/thesaurus as best practice • Promote publication of metadata for NGDA data sets
