  1. Functional coatings for glass Harry Stulajter CEO Nanovations Pty Ltd

  2. Definition: What is Nanotechnology? • The capacity to create functional materials, devices and systems with novel functions and properties through the control of matter at the Nano-scale. • Nano-scale means dimensions of roughly 1 to 100 Nanometre, where unique phenomena enable novel applications’ • Eight to ten atoms span one Nanometre.(Nm) • Nanotechnology glass coatings are between 20 – 30 Nm for photocatalytic Tio2 and 20 – 40 Nm Silica The average float glass is 5,000,000 Nm thick

  3. Nanovations products can be used on buildings and constructions glass for external application Surface Functions Benefits • Materials can improve: • Cleaning ability • Scratch resistance • Asset protection • Shield against Pollution • Chemical resistant • Anti dust • The technology can be used for surface applications: • Windows • Facade panels • Balustrades • Sky lights • Glass roofs • Can be easily reapplied • Cost effective • Durable • Does not react with • other materials • Speeds up cleaning

  4. Nature as a template Our ability to understand and control surface wetting has dramatically improved since our ability to observe and fabricate Nano scale surface topographies has been developed Nature Technology

  5. Products and Technology

  6. High Performance Glass Coatings Nanovations is the technology leader in the development of advanced glass coating solutions for the construction industry. World first Infra-red cured coating application at a building side in Sydney / Australia Problem solutions for Macquarie Bank, Sydney

  7. Smart Surface Glass Coatings Demonstration of the self cleaning effect on a Lotus leaf and on a glass slide coated with NG 1010. Water droplets take up dirt and dust. The dirt is more attracted to the water than to the substrate.

  8. Different behaviours of water on uncoated and coated glass.

  9. Glass Cleaning technology using sub-micron abrasive glass cleaner technology. 1000 x 1000 x Mineral deposits on glass, before and after the cleaning with Nanovations CL 40/ CL50. This is Nano-scale deep cleaning. The coating performance on the well prepared glass is significantly improved. Cleaning solutions help to solve problems prior to the application. Nanovations is a leader manufacturer of abrasive glass cleaning products.

  10. Protect glass from mineral deposits Coated Coated The non coated glass shows mineral deposits appearing with hard water, high pollution, salt spray or rundown marks from mineral building materials. The Coated glass is protected against staining. Problem solutions for Macquarie Bank Sydney

  11. Problems that can be easy removed or avoided • Ru Pollution bleed from sealant Salt spray staining river boat NY Hard water / Acid Rain spots Mineral deposit

  12. Hydrophobic Glass coatings

  13. Factory applied Photocatalytic TiO2 coating vsNanovations NG 1314 NG1010 Hydrophilic vs Hydrophobic

  14. UV protection without the use of pigments

  15. Nanovations coating changes the surface tension. Dirt is more attracted to the water than to the surfaceand is easy to wash off or is removed naturally by rain.

  16. Nanovations NG 1314 is the hardest wearing room temperature cured coating on the market

  17. X Conventional coatings create smooth protective layers that fill the microscopic surface pores. Glass Substrate

  18. In contrast, Nanovations products create an ultra thin coating by covering and penetrating the Nano scale surface structure and pores of the glass. Glass Substrate

  19. Dirt Dirt With the Nanovations range of products, the dirt has a significant smaller contact area with the substrate. Adhesion is low, dirt can be removed without much force. The surface is easy to clean. Glass Substrate On conventional coatings the contact area towards the surface is much larger . Easy to clean effect is provided via a non stick chemical and not via a reduction in contact area.

  20. Dust accumulation is significantly reduced when the surface has been treated. Uncoated Coated with NG 1314

  21. In situations where dust and dirt cannot be removed via wind action or ,exposure to clean rain, rinsing with clean water will remove large portions of the dirt and dust contaminations.

  22. Coating performance

  23. Testing: Abrasive durability testing Contact angle meter. After every 1000 cycles The contact angle is measured . This is used to measure the durability of the coatings. Wet scrub resistance tester. (Taber System ) 2 coated glass panels with brushes or abrasive sponge testing .

  24. Testing: Exposed weathering testing Exposed to the Australian sun in Townsville, Queensland. Exposed to the harshest environment in the Allunga Laboratory in Townsville, Queensland where there are some of the highest UV radiation levels in the world.

  25. Projects

  26. Project: Pinnacle Apartment Milsons Point • Connell Mott MacDonald’s project for Multiplex, Sydney. The Pinnacle is the first high rise building in the world where a nanotechnology glass protection system was used on the complete building to prevent glass contaminations.

  27. Macquarie Bank , Sydney Australia Excessive rundown marks and glass contaminations.

  28. Latitude Sydney Glass contamination from construction work. The complete building is affected. Vision is disrupted and the glass cannot be cleaned anymore.

  29. The Hyde Tower, Sydney. Glass contamination due to run down from facade elements.

  30. The Gulf Hotel Bahrain Test panel after 3 months exposure . The facade glass is coated with reflective metal coating (internally).
