Enhancing Efficiency in Field Lab Operations: Automating XRF Data Handling and Sample Processing
This document outlines solutions for optimizing field lab operations faced with outdated technology and operational challenges. It discusses the integration of a new XRF tool that automates processes like custom EDD importing, decision making based on XRF readings, and sample tracking. Specific needs include instant dig decisions based on XRF data, daily and monthly exports of readings, and limited sample information edits. It reviews the workflow for data management and sample analysis, while ensuring effective communication amongst lab technicians.

Field Lab Setup Or dealing with “Don’t worry, he’ll figure it out.”, when you are the He.
Field Lab Problems Old, limited computer (WYSIWYG) No Internet New XRF tool Rotating field lab technicians “SOP?, that’s in the SOP?”
Tool Needs • Automatic custom EDD importing • Automatic dig decisions, based on: • Average of XRF readings • XRF readings • Average of XRF readings/lab results • XRF readings/lab results • Sample tracking • Limited sample info edits (if they can’t touch it they can’t break it)
Export Needs • Instant XRF based dig decisions • Daily exports for large exceedances • Monthly exports of XRF readings and lab results (trump and maximum) • Property exports of XRF readings and lab results
Great, so . . . How did we do it?
DB Entry • Data Manager creates houses, DUs, locations, and samples (pretty boring stuff here, not going to bore you)
Sample Tracking Lab tech puts in field data
XRFing & Processing We want to see if a given DU should be dug down Z or Z + a bit, so we start at the bottom After XRFing all of one depth we check
Sample Analysis What’s up, doc?
Dig Decision • XRF is all well and good what is the decision? • The DDT only calculates a dig decision when all samples were available.
