    4. Monroe Doctrine • Speech given by US president James Monroe in 1823. • “The American continents ... are henceforth not to be considered as subjects for future colonization by any European powers.” • America would resist any attempts by European countries to dominate/control Latin America.

    5. Teddy Roosevelt (1903) • advocated Expansionism(US acquiring more territory/land) • “speak softly and carry a big stick” • (use peaceful negotiation + threat of war)

    6. Yellow Journalism • poorly researched news articles • exaggerations, lies, scandals, gossip/rumors • Joseph Pulitzer, William Randolph Hearst published sensationalist articles pushing the US towards war with Spain

Divide up the reading with your partner and answer the questions in your notebook. 5. Write down the definitions to the following terms in your notebook: Roosevelt Corollary, USS Maine, Treaty of Paris, Ten Years’ War, Platt Amendment

    8. Homework: Diary Entry (Due Thursday November 1st, 2012) • Write a short summary of the Spanish American War. In your summary, you must use at least SIX terms/details from the reading or notes today. PLEASE UNDERLINE THESE DETAILS. • Create a short timeline in your notebook with EIGHT specific events from the reading/notes.
