  2. 2013 – 2014 Florida Governor Matthew Cantrell’s “STEPS TO EXCELLENCE” ACTIVITIES February 13thMeeting Round Table Discussion INVOCATION Heavenly Father, When we long for life without trials and work without difficulties, remind us that oaks grow strong in contrary winds, that diamonds are made under pressure, and that pearls are the result of irritation. When we weary of our service programs, strengthen our resolve so that others may benefit. And now bless this food to our use and us to Your service. Amen President Karl Price presented Paula Powell with a cake to celebrate herearning the Golden Pinnacle Award from Watson Realty for being the top sales person for their Intracoastal Office. MAYPORT K KIDS’ VALENTINE’S DANCE CHARITY FUNDRAISER On February 14th, the Mayport Elementary School K Kids Club held their 3rd annual Valentine’s Dance Fundraiser. Pizza, framed pictures of the kids and other things were sold to raise money for 2 charities to be chosen by the kids. Our Fletcher Key Clubbers attended as well as 2 students from Mayport Middle School Builders Club. Our Kiwanians, Bill MacLeod, LalRamdeen, Karl Price, and John Bates attended along with MayportElementary School Faculty Advisor Brigitte Kimes, and Principal Yvonne Ferguson. From: “Invocations for Kiwanis Occasions” by James J. Muench BOARD MEETINGS Every 2nd Monday PRESIDENT’S COMMENTS This is a big week for our club! Our new morning club initiated by Alison Cacella met for the first time on Feb 25th. On the same day we had our first K-Kids Club meeting of the year for Finnegan Elementary. We need to offer our full support for these important ventures. Butch Shadwell has us set up for two scholarships at Fletcher High School, and has April 11TH set for the Pancake Breakfast at Community Presbyterian. A special thanks to Lucy Watson for her idea to give out chocolate gift of kindness on Valentine's Day. I had a couple of great experiences, and I hope those who participated had similar gratifying contacts. Be sure to hold March 8th open for our community service project of painting the fence for the Beaches Museum(10 AM til 1 PM). The Players Championship Birdies for Charity is our next challenge. We made around $900.00 last year; and if we get innovative, we should shoot for a lot more this year. Let’s really brainstorm this to expand our contacts. What’s the perfect way for the oldest kids in elementary school to celebrate Valentine’s Day? A Valentine’s Dance with a charitable twist! At Mayport Elementary Coastal Sciences Academy, the K-Kids Club, sponsored by the Kiwanis Club of Jacksonville Beaches, and led by an energetic advisor, holds such a dance each year to raise funds for a number of charitable projects. K-Kids Faculty Advisor Brigitte Kimes, along with Kiwanis Club Advisor John Bates, guide this enterprising group of young people in their choices of charitable projects; added to the mix is a “sister school” in Costa Rica with whom the kids and teachers talk about projects and other cultural issues. Ms. Kimes says, “The kids have a lot of ‘say’ in what projects they choose.” In the past, the kids’ projects have ranged from creating signage to warn boaters of endangered Right Whales, helping decorate the Kiwanis’s annual Seniors Thanksgiving Dinner, and partnering with the Make-A-Wish Foundation to help young children with serious medical problems. This year, Mayport parents, Fletcher High Key Clubbers, Mayport Middle Builders Clubbers, and other Kiwanians joined in the fun, helping set up and manage the dance. Karl Price, Beaches Kiwanis President, commented, “The Kiwanis Club of Jacksonville Beaches is very proud of the accomplishments of this very active and committed group of young people here at Mayport Coastal Sciences Academy, and we encourage all our clubs to follow their example!” BIRTHDAYS /ANNIVERSARIES Happy Birthday LalRamdeen 3/6 THANK YOU READERS: Tuesday, Feb 18th- LalRamdeen and Karl Price read at the Navy Child Development Center Wednesday, Feb 19th- John Bates read at Anders Park Head Start
