  6. Foundations of the Family A social unit Secular – Relationships and “social units” vary from culture to culture and are fluid and subjective.

  7. Foundations of the Family A social unit Sacred – All relationships are created and defined by God

  8. Foundations of the Family Consist of parents & children Individuals Secular – People are a product of matter plus time plus chance. There is no objective meaning in life. People make up their own “meaning.”

  9. Foundations of the Family Consist of parents & children Individuals Sacred – People are created in God’s image and are therefore intrinsically valuable and have been given purpose.

  10. Foundations of the Family Parents Secular – Sex is the biological act of reproducing and is to be enjoyed however and whenever one chooses. Parents are two people who have reproduced that may or may not be married.

  11. Foundations of the Family Parents Secular – Marriage is a socially or ritually recognized union or legal contract between spouses that establishes rights and obligations between them.

  12. Foundations of the Family Parents Sacred – Sex is two becoming one flesh and is a sacred gift to be enjoyed within marriage. Marriage is a covenant relationship between a man and a woman that points to the relationship between Jesus Christ and His bride, the church.

  13. Foundations of the Family Children Secular – The result of reproduction. Shares DNA. Our biological instincts have evolved to make us feel “love” and the desire to protect our children for the survival of our species.

  14. Foundations of the Family Children Sacred – Children are a gift from God. God refers to himself as our “Father” and we are His children.

  15. Foundations of the Family Child Rearing Secular – Parenting is about children being happy and giving them the tools to grow up to be wealthy and successful citizens

  16. Foundations of the Family Child Rearing Sacred – Parenting is about pointing children to the Word. As they grow in their knowledge and understanding of the written Word of God they will come to realize their sin and their need of the living Word of God, Jesus.
