  1. What you SHOULD know, but I am not sure you do not… A few Extended Essay Tips

  2. Viva Voice Interview • Interview between you and your supervisor at the END of the process (sometime after Jan 13) • PURPOSE: • Final check on plagiarism/malpractice • Chance to reflect on successes and difficulties • Reflect on what has been learned • AID IN SUPERVISOR’S REPORT • 10-15 Minutes • The supervisor’s report does NOT do the examiner’s job… refer to things (largely process related) that are not obvious in the essay • IF, AFTER THIS MEETING, THERE ARE MAJOR ISSUES, YOU CAN TURN IN ANOTHER DRAFT

  3. The Argument • Your paper must be an argument related to your research question. • You are trying to prove SOMETHING • You are trying to investigate something and make a CONCLUSION or JUDGMENT • You DO NOT need a counter-claim section for MOST papers • You should, SOMEWHERE, acknowledge the other side • It can be in a specific section…

  4. What to avoid… according to examiners… • DO NOT • Forget to analyze the research question • Ignore the assessment criteria • Collect material that is irrelevant to the research question • USE THE INTERNET UNCRITICALLY • Plagiarize • MERELY DESCRIBE OR REPORT (evidence must be USED to support) • Repeat the introduction in the conclusion • Cite sources that are not used

  5. Title Page • FOR THE NEXT DRAFT: • Your Name • Your Research Question • Your Candidate Number • Your Word Count

  6. Formal Presentation • PAGE NUMBERS • Table of Contents! (MUST include Intro, Body, Conclusion) • Abstract comes BEFORE Table of Contents and is NOT part of the Table of Contents

  7. Your Category • PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE read read read read read read read read read read the requirements for your category (History, Literature, Psychology, Film) • I think that there are little things you are overlooking that could result in an automatic E

  8. Thesis • YOU NEED TO HAVE ONE • At the end of your introduction • In your paper, you are: • Taking a position • Constructing an argument based on evidence • Defending your thesis You have 4,000 words, the IB examiner is expecting a coherent, organized, structured, logical, critical, in-depth examination, and defense of your thesis.

  9. Appendix? • NOT NEEDED • Include in Table of Contents • Pictures, graphs, illustrations, etc… • Their significance must be obvious in the text.

  10. Citations • Footnotes AND Parenthesis?!?!?! What? No! • PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE make sure you are consistent in your citations and that you have taken the time to LEARN how to do it right.
