  1. Can Yoga help you shed those extra holiday pounds? I know what you're thinking already. When most people think of losing weight, they envision themselves running on a treadmill for what seems like hours, until they're drenched in sweat and just about ready to collapse. The mere thought of this would keep any sane person away from the gym.

  2. While it's true, practicing Yoga does not burn the sheer number of calories that an intense aerobic exercise would do, Kundalini Yoga does offer more burn than traditional Yoga types. On top of this, there is also an 'americanized' version of Kundalini Yoga referred to as "Power Yoga". It combines meditative breathing with more active movements.

  3. Nonetheless, the hidden power of Yoga may lie in the increased energy it brings. Look at it this way - increased energy in turn results in more physical activities being done throughout the day, which overall contributes to a healthier lifestyle where a higher than normal caloric burn is happening. Basically you get a slow extended burn, versus a quick burst. Contrast this with someone who is sedentary for most of the day, and then decides to squeeze in a quick workout session at the local gym. Basically, their caloric burn rate is more like an end-of-day-spike.

  4. Other explanations contribute the weight loss of Yoga practitioners to "mindfulness". This mindfulness can give one a new perspective on their relationship with their mind and body. Being more mindful of the body in turn makes one more conscious of the way they take care of it. This thought process eventually makes its way to an awareness of the foods chosen. Suddenly it's more desirable to put down the donut, and pick up that apple. Indeed if one can see their body as a temple, more effort may be made toward not polluting it.

  5. Also, some believe that becoming in tune with your body can also change the way you perceive certain feelings and sensations. Hunger for instance is merely a feeling. When one is aware that this is just a sensation in the body, they can learn to control it. So if summer is right around the corner, and your goal is to drop those last 15 pounds quickly, Yoga in general may not be what you are looking for. However, for a long term solution that you can incorporate into your lifestyle, Yoga may give you the results you want.
