Joseph Girouard Shares Useful Tips to Ensure the Safety of Seniors At Home Noted senior citizen advocate Joseph Girouard believes that with a rising number of seniors living independently, it has become more important than ever to make sure they are safe at home. Apart from common accidents like falls, poisonings, burns, etc; older adults living on their own often fall victim to scams since they are perceived as easy targets. According to Joseph Girouard, there are many ways to keep seniors safe from all such accidents. He has shared below some useful tips to ensure their safety at home: - Replace all the burned-out light bulbs in the house so that seniors can see properly. Also, it is important to keep them away from climbing a ladder for changing the bulbs themselves. - Make sure the stairs, hallways, and paths are clear of objects, like books, shoes, or any other clutter. - It is advisable for seniors to use rails & banisters when going up & down the stairs. - Never place scatter rugs at the bottom or top of the stairs. - Tape all area rugs to the floor so that they don’t move when someone walks on them. - Keep the walker close to the bedside at night. This is particularly very important for seniors with poor vision, moderate dementia, etc. - When walking on smooth floors, seniors must wear non-slip footwear, like slippers with rubber/no-slip bottoms or flat; or thin-soled shoes which fit well. - Install a high-rise toilet seat so it is easier for the seniors to sit down & get up. - Seniors can consider hiring a professional caregiver to help them with tasks, grocery shopping, meal preparation, light housekeeping, etc. - It is also important for older adults to keep all emergency numbers handy. These numbers should include that of a close friend or family member, healthcare provider, poison control, etc. Joseph Girouard believes that these small home-safety strategies can go a long way in ensuring the safety of seniors.
