  2. Library Research Tools • Library Catalog • Books (including netLibrary e-books) • Titles of Journals, Magazines and Newspapers subscribed to by UMW Libraries (Simpson & CGPS) • Databases • Articles in Journals, Magazines and Newspapers

  3. Where do I begin? How do I find books on my topic?

  4. Book Catalog: • Perform a “Keyword Search” • Enter your keywords • Click “Search”

  5. Book Catalog: results • Both print and electronic books available • NetLibrary – online book • Library of Congress - print book • Print books at Stafford or Simpson Libraries

  6. Book Catalog: how do I find this book? • Call number indicates location • Stafford locations – available at CGPS Library • Books at Fredericksburg campus - request thru Illiad • Click “full” link to access ebooks

  7. – online books • In the Full Record, click the “Online” link to access the book in NetLibrary • Or select NetLibrary on the Library’s homepage

  8. You MUST create a NetLibrary account in order to access electronic books from off-campus.

  9. Where do I begin? How do I find articles on my topic?

  10. Database A-Z list Databases by Subject Research Guides Databases – 24/7 • Click the drop-down menu by “Research by Subject” • Click on “Education – CGPS” to access suggested research resources • Click the “GO” button

  11. Research Guide • Click on the name of a database to begin searching • Contact Library if you need help

  12. Can I use the databases from home? Yes! jsmith password

  13. Education Full Text • Enter your keywords • Use quote marks to search for phrases • Consider using some of the “Limit” options • Click “Go” to begin search

  14. Education Full Text • Click “PDF” or “HTML” links to retrieve articles • Click “Locate Article” if not full text through the database • Consider using a “Subject term” in your search • Sort results by full text, scholarly or popular publications

  15. “Locate Journal Article” page • Is the article available in a UMW database? YES. • Follow the database links to access your article. If in print, request through ILLIAD

  16. Education Research Complete • Enter your keywords • Use quote marks to search for phrases • Consider using some of the “Limit your results” options • Use the “Thesaurus” to identify subject terms • Click Search

  17. Education Research Complete • Click “PDF” or “HTML” links to retrieve articles • Click “Locate Journal Article” if not full text through the database

  18. “Locate Journal Article” page • Is the article available in a UMW database? NO. • To request this article, click the ILLIAD links.

  19. Enter your keywords • Use quote marks to search for phrases • Consider using some of the “Limit results” options • Click “Search”

  20. Click “PDF” or “HTML” links to retrieve articles • Click “Locate Journal Article” if not full text through the database

  21. “Locate Journal Article” page • Is the article available in a UMW database? YES. • Follow the database links to access your article. If in print, request through ILLIAD

  22. Do an “Advanced Search” • Enter your keywords • Use quote marks to search for phrases • Consider using some of the search limit options • Use the “Thesaurus” to identify subject terms • Click “Search”

  23. Click “Find in Library” if not full text in the database • Click the PDF links to access complete documents

  24. Search Tips • Try different databases • Try different keywords • Truncation - * • Phrase Searching - quotation marks • ShowMe videos – online database tutorials • Ask Librarians for assistance

  25. What if my materials are at the main campus Library? What if UMW doesn’t have what I need? • Use Illiad to request materials not located at the CGPS Library • Create an online Illiad Account • Submit requests through Library’s website • Request books, articles, dissertations • Some fees might be involved • Delivered online or to CGPS Library
