  1. ES-modifier workshop18. september 2008 Introduktion til ES-modifier

  2. Use 1 Use 2 Use 3 Use 4 Fundamental problem - in Use communication 1:1 ”Multiplication” CBI Overflow M/I Tentative ES Final ES Iterations DU 100’s substances 1000’s products Case studies ”Real life”

  3. Fundamental problem - in Use communication Caugthbetween a rock and a hardplace! SOLUTION: ES-modifier Giving the formulator a tool to do limited variation within the boundaries of safe use as communicated by supplier.

  4. Focus group for tool:Formulators FORMULATORS own use uses by their customers

  5. ES Substance 1 Duration: 2 hrs Ventilllation: No RMM: Mask ES Substance 2 Duration: 8hrs Ventillation RMM: No ES Preparation Duration: ? Ventillation:? RMM: ? Key use of ES-modifier 1. Harmonisation (OC’s and RMM’s) of ES’s received from different suppliers. 2. Scale the ES according to specific needs (eg. customer request) + = Duration: 8 hrs ES Preparation Duration: 4hrs RMM: No Customer conditions

  6. Key OUTPUT: RCR Risk Characterisation Ratio < 1 ≥ 1 Exposure HUMAN DNEL ES MODIFIER Exposure ENVIRONMENT PNEC Not Safe Safe

  7. Calculation of RCR Specific Substance Specific use • Use in headlines • - LCS + usergroup • Descriptors of Use Substance Data - Eco- and Tox data - Phys-Chem data Use details(OC; RMM) Models DNEL PNEC Exposure (human) Exposure (env.) RCRhuman = ; RCRenv. = Exposure Exposure RCR < 1 PNEC DNEL SAFE USE

  8. Use in headlines 1. Lifecycle stage Manufacturing Formulation End use Service Life Industry Industry 2. User group Industry Professional Consumer 3. Descriptors of use

  9. Exposure Assessment Models • Combined Human + Environmental assessement • Default exposure models: • Ecetoc TRA (Process categories in DoU) • EUSES, with ERC’s (or industry specific release fractions) • Other models being included: • StoffenManager; RiskOfDerm; COSHH-BAUA

  10. Focus for ES-modifier tool • NOT • Company with risk assessment experts or who will make DU-CSR • Company participating in pan-european activity regarding development of ES-concept under REACH • HOT • Formulating DU company/ Small trading company importing from outside of EU • Basic knowledge how to make SDS for preparations (max. 1-2 persons in HS&E department) • No knowledge about self-classfication • ES knowledge through national helpdesks/trade organisations

  11. Background for Project • First prototypes developed in Danish paint project as part of preparation for REACH • Tool development for broad Danish Industry • Funded by Danish Environmental Agency • Project responsible: Confederation of Danish Industry, Vibeke Plambeck • Sub-contractors: DHI (environment) and hse consult • TNO associated project member (human health)

  12. Develoment plan Functionality • DU Companies • DU sector groups (translation of e.g. PROC) Communication in supply chain • M/I Companies & sector groups (CEFIC) Discussion of responsibility • Authorities Validation of calculations • Experts

  13. How to use ES-modifier • Describe use in headlines- Choose lifecycle stage (and user group)- Describtors of use • Insert substance data (directly/plug-in) • Select substance to work with • Choose models(Default models are Ecetoc TRA and EUSES) • Describe specific details of use • Make calculations and observe RCR results

  14. Demonstration of ES-modifier
