  1. The Celts • Associated with Britain and Ireland, even though for a time ruled as far south as Italy • Bizarre religious rituals

  2. The Visigoths • Violent group, extended rule throughout Spain and southern France.

  3. The Ostrogoths • Relative to the Visigoths, conquered and ruled much of Italy.

  4. The Danes • Similar to the Vikings, they ruled present-day Denmark.

  5. The Norse • Similar to the Vikings, ruled present-day Norway.

  6. The Vikings • Violent and interesting civilization related to the Danes, Norse, and Swedes. • Travelers and Explorers

  7. The Vandals • Barbarians from Northern Africa, conquered Sardinia and Corsica.

  8. The Magyars • Barbarian group associated with present-day Turkey, wreaked havoc on the Eastern Roman Empire.

  9. The Franks • One of the most long-lasting barbarian groups. • Conquered much of present-day France.

  10. The Slavs • Conquered the largest area, extending through Russia, Poland, and East Europe.

  11. The Bavarians and Lombards • Ruled present-day Germany

  12. The Angles, Jutes, and Saxons • Ruled southern Britain
