Scientific Measurement

In this lesson, we focus on the scientific measurement of liquid volumes using graduated cylinders. Students will draw a different scientific tool from yesterday's class and describe its purpose. Review questions include discussing what was measured previously, the measuring tools used, and the units applied. Today’s objective is to measure liquids in liters and milliliters, emphasizing correct usage of the graduated cylinder. We will also reflect on how easy it is to measure in liters versus milliliters and engage in a long-term review of Dr. Goldberger’s significant contributions to science.

  1. Scientific Measurement 9-26-12

  2. Bell Work 9-26-12 Draw a different scientific tool than you drew yesterday. Tell what it is used for.

  3. Review: • Name something you measured yesterday. • What did you used to measure it? • What units did you put on it?

  4. 9-26-12 Objective I will practice measuring with a ruler the “scientific” way, with a focus on the graduated cylinder. HW: None

  5. Vocabulary: • Liter-the unit we use to measure liquid. • Today you will use the liter to measure liquid. You will use either L or mL.

  6. Graduated Cylinder • Used to measure volumes of liquids.

  7. Closure: Is it easy to measure liters? Is it easy to measure with milliliters?

  8. Long Term Review: Who was Dr. Goldberger? Why was his work so important?
